HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL Broadway Run & Movie Musical Planned For 2016?
1980s cinematic cult classic HEATHERS sings byway of the recent Off-Broadway production HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL and the show's producer, J. Todd Harris, reveals preliminary plans to produce the show on Broadway as well as shepherd a feature film adaptation of the property in 2016 as part of a new interview.
Harris shares of both the Broadway production and the proposed film, "The ideal situation is to have them both released at the same time, around 2016."
Additionally, Harris says of the short-lived Off-Broadway run, "We knew 'Heathers' would have a cult following, but we were surprised with the response we got from audiences."
Musing on the pertinent themes of the piece, Harris adds, "Although bullying has changed mediums, its ugly nature isn't very different and hasn't changed much in, well, the entirety of history."
The official description of HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL is as follows: "September, 1989. Westerberg High is terrorized by a shoulder-padded, scrunchie-wearing junta: Heather, Heather and Heather, the hottest and cruelest girls in all of Ohio. But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend, the dark sexy stranger J.D., who plans to put the Heathers in their place - six feet under. Deliciously, darkly funny, romantic and moving, Heathers: The Musical is a truthful, uplifting parable for anyone who's ever been in love, in trouble, or in high school."
Of note, HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL began previews Off-Broadway at New World Stages on March 15 and opened on March 31 before closing on August 4, having played 145 regular performances and 17 previews.
