Review: CAMBODIAN ROCK BAND at Theater Mu Photo Review: CAMBODIAN ROCK BAND at Theater Mu
by Jared Fessler on July 01, 2022 in Minneapolis / St. Paul

What did our critic think of CAMBODIAN ROCK BAND at Theater Mu? This production was at the Jungle Theater as it was in co-production with Theater Mu. It was my first time at the Jungle Theater and the space was a great fit for this production. As an Asian-American, I always apprieacte that art that Theater Mu produces and think everytime I see a production through Theater Mu, how lucky am I that I live in a city where we have the second largest Asian-American Theater in the nation?!

THE GREAT GATSBY is one of my absolute favourite books – the characters, the landscape, the era are all so beautifully described by F. Scott Fitzgerald. You might never witness a concert in such a unique location perfect for one if not the most successful Austrian musical, written by Michael Kunze (book and lyrics) and Silvester Levay (music). The concert feels like a celebration of the show's unbroken success. Since opening night in 1992, ELISABETH has become a global phenomenon. More than twelve million people have seen the story about Elisabeth's tragic life and death. A Musical National treasure, history Made In Austria.

by Robert Encila-Celdran on July 01, 2022 in Phoenix

The script is clever, replete with snide banter befitting a satire of Shakespeare’s illustrious tragedy. We meet the usual suspects - the upright, the guilty, and the aggrieved - primed to settle a score or two. As they move through various gates and a chaotic mess of random earthly objects, actors are made to piece together a set of uneven stairs, a theatrical metaphor inspired by the work of Polish theater artist Tadeusz Kantor.

Together they've created a musical comedic romp, 2 Pianos 4 Hands (2P4H) playing at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, an ode to their lifelong obsession with the 88 keys. If you've ever endured a music lesson as a child, the flashbacks experienced here are all too real.
Review: Theatre Raleigh's YELLOW FACE Photo Review: Theatre Raleigh's YELLOW FACE
by Jeffrey Kare on July 01, 2022 in Raleigh

What did our critic think? Yellow Face follows Asian-American playwright DHH. Fresh off his Tony Award win for M. Butterfly, he leads a protest against the casting of Jonathan Pryce as the Eurasian pimp in the original Broadway production of Miss Saigon, condemning the practice as 'yellowface.' His position soon comes back to haunt him when he mistakes a Caucasian actor, Marcus G. Dahlman, for mixed-race, and casts him as the lead Asian role of his own Broadway-bound comedy, Face Value. When DHH discovers the truth of Marcus' ethnicity, he tries to conceal his blunder to protect his reputation as an Asian-American role model by passing the actor off as a 'Siberian Jew.'

Review: EMMA at Guthrie Theatre Photo Review: EMMA at Guthrie Theatre
by Jared Fessler on July 01, 2022 in Minneapolis / St. Paul

What did our critic think of EMMA at Guthrie Theatre? Emma Woodhouse prides herself on being a matchmaker with an impeccable track record, much to the chagrin of her dear friend Mr. Knightley. Her latest scheme revolves around the sweet Harriet Smith, whom Emma advises to reject a perfectly good marriage proposal in favor of another eligible bachelor. However, her best-laid plans are turned upside down by unpredictable displays of affection, unexpected rivals and Emma's sudden realization that true love may have been under her nose all along. With screwball comedy and surprises aplenty, this fresh, fast-paced world premiere interprets the Jane Austen classic with delightfully unconventional flair.
