BWW Weighs In: Spring Cleaning for the Mind and Body
Spring is here! It's the perfect time of year to shed old habits and introduce a few new practices into your daily life. Spring cleaning isn't just for your closet anymore, this is spring cleaning for your mind and body. Here are four new habits you can easily implement to begin your own spring cleaning today.
HOT WATER WITH LEMON
I am a huge fan of detox tea in the morning, with a squeeze of lemon (or lemon essential oils). Look for teas with ingredients like milk thistle, peppermint, dandelion, fennel, and licorice root which alkalize the body (meaning it lowers the pH of an acidic body helping to reduce inflammation and symptoms related to inflammation). Teas with these ingredients will help to restore the liver and kidneys, which, when running efficiently, will help flush toxins from your system.
DITCH TOXIC BODY PRODUCTS
If you are like me, you watch what you eat and go to great lengths to control the quality of food that you put into your body. Your skin is your largest organ and absorbs everything, so I urge you to also consider what you put ON your body! Many of today's popular cosmetics, lotions, and self care products are loaded with carcinogens and other health destroying ingredients. For starters, search your cabinets and toss any products that contain fragrances, phthalates, or mineral oil. Instead, look for products that are pH balanced and free of parabens, phthalates, fragrances, and animal byproducts.
ADOPT A MEDITATION PRACTICE
Do you find yourself giving into doubt, negative self talk, or insecurity? Or maybe you have been feeling a little too jealous, judgmental, or insecure as you scroll through your Instagram feed?
You are what you think. And your thoughts shape the way you see the world. Starting your day with five minutes of quiet time, focused breathing, or guided meditation can rewire your thoughts and set you up for success and abundance. What we focus on grows, so learning to find breath, calm, and quiet for a few minutes every day will enhance your outlook for the better.
Find the practice that works for you. That might mean movement based meditation such as yoga, or following a guided meditation on YouTube, or simply counting your breaths until you feel a sense of calm in your body. There's no right way to meditate, so start small and do what feels right for you! Clean out the negative thoughts and reconnect to the grand, unique, and amazing being that is inside of you.
LISTEN TO YOUR GUT
Literally and figuratively! Your gut, or your intuition, will always tell you when something isn't quite right. Learn to listen to to your body, and to your gut.
Have you been feeling overly tired, or more susceptible to illness? Has your skin been breaking out more frequently? Maybe you just can't seem to lose that last five pounds ? These are signs that your body is out of balance. Your gut is your guide for overall well being. Your immune system and serotonin are directly linked to gut health, so a happy gut equals a happy body and happy mind. Improved gut health is linked to increased immunity, energy, clarity, balance, clear skin, and weight loss. Follow your intuition, if something doesn't feel right, it might be time for some spring cleaning!
