Beautiful: The Carole King Musical in Broadway BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL
Keller Auditorium
11/1-11/6/2016
Long before she was Carole King, chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, BROOKLYN girl with Passion and Chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock 'n' roll. But it wasn't until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice. BEAUTIFUL tells the inspiring true story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than BEAUTIFUL music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.

Assistance in Broadway ASSISTANCE
Theatre Vertigo
10/14-11/12/2016
For these young assistants, life is an endless series of humiliations at the hands of their hellacious boss, a powerful uber-magnate. In rare moments of calm when the phone calls stop rolling, Nick and Nora and their traumatized co-workers question whether all their work will lead to success—or just more work. Leslye Headland’s ASSISTANCE is a biting, high-octane satire about our attraction to power and what we’re willing to sacrifice to stay in its orbit.

Hold These Truths in Broadway HOLD THESE TRUTHS
Portland Center Stage at The Armory
10/1-11/13/2016
As the U.S. joins World War II, Gordon Hirabayashi agonizes over government orders to forcibly remove and mass incarcerate all people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast. As he fights to reconcile his country’s betrayal with his passionate belief in the U.S. Constitution, Hirabayashi journeys toward a greater understanding of America’s triumphs — and a confrontation with its failures. Inspired by the true story of University of Washington student, Gordon Hirabayashi. Ryun Yu, who played Hirabayashi at ACT Theatre in Seattle, reprises the role at The Armory.

The Oregon Trail in Broadway THE OREGON TRAIL
Portland Center Stage at The Armory
10/29-11/20/2016
You have died of dysentery! For those who grew up playing “The Oregon Trail” computer game, dysentery was serious business. In this fresh and funny retelling of our history, two Janes traverse The Oregon Trail. “Now Jane” is playing the computer game in 1997; “Then Jane” is in a covered wagon in 1848. A judgey game show narrator, a domineering sister and two oxen try to corral the two Janes. Fate maneuvers them both to a conclusion that changes their lives and sends them to the end of the trail.

Reborning in Broadway REBORNING
Beirut Wedding World Theatre Project
10/28-11/20/2016
Beirut Wedding World Theatre Project presents Reborning by Zayd Dohrn, a dark comedy about a troubled young artist who makes baby dolls that look like real babies. The definition of art, how we deal with loss and the mystery of creation are also subjects of this tight, well-constructed, three person dark comedy. How do we heal from loss? What is the engine of art? How does a woman own her life in the 21st century? Who owns any given work of art, the artist or the audience? None of these questions are answered in this play, but all of them and more are confronted and explored. This play doesn’t fall into easy labels or categories. This work of art is being produced by the Beirut Wedding World Theatre Project, the brain child of Bobby Bermea and Jamie M. Rea. Bermea and Rea seek to create theatre that challenges the dominant cultural paradigm in order to create a more tolerant, expansive and celebratory philosophy. Tiffany Groben, who stars as Kelly, brought Beirut Wedding the script and is one of the up-and-coming young stars in the Portland theatre scene.
