Dion Millington to Star as 'Dorothy' in Harlem Rep's THE WIZ, Opening 10/18

The Harlem Repertory Theatre's AUDELCO winning multi-media production of the THE WIZ will feature AUDELCO Award-winning singer/actress Dion Millington as Dorothy. THE WIZ will be directed and choreographed by Keith Lee Grant whose 2009 production of THE WIZ won the AUDELCO awards for Best Director and Choreographer of a musical. Critically acclaimed animator Edward Corcino and UNIMA Award-winning designer Daniel Fergus Tamulonis have created entertaining and provocative video animations, costumes and puppets for the HRT's new chamber version of THE WIZ.

The production will be staged environmentally. The cast of ten talented professional singers and actors will sing and dance moving all around the audience as Dorothy and her companions take the them on an unforgettable journey through the magical land of OZ.

THE WIZ opens October 18.

The Harlem Repertory Theatre's 2014-15 season will be performed at its new three-floor facility located at 308 West 133rd Street in the heart of Harlem. STAGE ONE (second floor) serves as a rental space for outside groups and a lounge for our patrons. The Box Office, concessions and the actors' dressing rooms are also located on this level. THE LAB (third floor) is a newly renovated flexible black box theatre space. The gods (fourth floor) serves as costume and set storage areas.

Keith Lee Grant (Director/Choreographer)

He holds an MFA from the Yale School of Drama, a MA from the Pennsylvania State University, and a Certificate from the American Conservatory Theater's Advance Training Program. He has directed and/or choreographed over one hundred professional and university productions ranging from Shakespeare's AS YOU LIKE It to Miguel Pinero's SHORT EYES to large-scale Musicals like Sondheim's SWEENEY TODD, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, and Jerry Herman's MAME.

In addition to his work as a director/choreographer Mr. Grant has also performed on Broadway in MARIE CHRISTINE, SHOW BOAT, and the U.S. premiere of the musical RAGTIME. He performed leading and supporting roles Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, the York Theater, the Jewish Repertory Theater, New Federal Theatre, AMAS Theatre, and The New York Theater Workshop.

Mr. Grant is the recipient of the 2012 AUDELCO awards for the Best Director of a Musical and Best Musical Production for the HRT's DREAMGIRLS. He won the 2009 AUDELCO awards for the Best Choreographer of a Musical and Best Director of a Musical for his work on the HRT's production of the classic musical THE WIZ. The HRT has had twenty AUDELO nominations and won five awards.

Dion Millington (Dorothy)

Ms. Millington won the 2013 AUDELCO award for the best performance by an actress in a musical for her portrayal of Effie in the HRT's production of DREAMGIRLS. In addition to her work as a stage actress, Ms. Millington has also performed in the top nightclubs in Manhattan. She is also cast as the "Somewhere " soloist in WEST SIDE STORY and Sister Birdie in Langston Hugh's TAMBOURINES TO GLORY in the HRT's 2014-15 season.

Daniel Fergus Tamulonis (Puppet and Costume Designer)

Mr. Tamulonis holds a B.A. in Theatre from the Pennsylvania State University and has done work towards an M.F.A. in Puppetry at the University of Connecticut. He was a student at the International Puppetry Institute in Charleville-Mézières, France, working with Margareta Niculescu and Julie Taymor. A long-time puppeteer, Mr. Tamulonis toured nationally with the Atlanta-based Center for Puppetry Arts and was the recipient of an UNIMA Award for Excellence In the Art of Puppetry for his production of the Ravel/Colette opera, L'enfant et les sortiléges (THE BOY AND THE MAGIC).
