KennyG - New director/choreographer, new scenic designer, new lighting designer, same costumes, same musical supervisor. Sadly, we can expect a totally re-imagined production. The set and the choreography were outstanding on Broadway, so I am disappointed by these changes. On the other hand, the musical arrangements are so fantastic, too...and I am excited to see someone else's take on the production with a fresh, new approach. BUT IT BETTER BE GOOD!!!!!

Robo - The worst part of the show is the judges comments. Saying, "You chose the wrong song, your tone was pitchy, and you haven't had that wow moment yet is not constructive criticism. Nobody chooses the wrong song or sings off pitch on purpose. And Simon continually praises Crystal Bowersox, because he predicted her to win weeks ago. And, God forbid, Simon should ever be wrong.

I've seen readings of "Barrier Island" and it promises to be a terrific production -- funny, moving, thought-provoking with beautifully drawn characters. David Stallings is such a talented young playwright. Well worth your time and kind attention!

LOVE NEVER DIES Changes Likely Before Broadway Run 2010/03/11
Posted: 3/24/2010
Melissa - I agree with the believability issue as to the Phantom's complete transformation from murderer to "nice guy." While Beneath the Moonless Sky is one of my favorite songs of the show, the timing of the encounter - night before her wedding - and the nature of it, especially following the end of POTO, is alittle off. While I think a lot of people want them to be together sexually, I don't think a one night stand (especially making Christine unfaithful to her fiance) is appropriate. The title song of Love Never Dies is gorgeous and I definitely plan on seeing the show on Broadway. I don't think the end - at least the fact that Christine and the Phantom DO NOT end up together should be changed. Theirs is the picture of forbidden love, so to have them actually end up together would go against POTO and the original novel.

Sweet Caroline's puts you close to the stage with no obstructions, allowing interaction with the singers. I had never seen some of the young people, including Jay DeYonker and Kelli Barrett, onstage, and their performances made me want to see their movie.

Denis - The surprise captured was touching beyond belief. We so often make the mistake of honouring a composer or actor after they have passed on and to have had the forsight to do this as Stephen Sondheim celebrates his 80th Birthday is how it should be. For those who live in New York or for those like me outside of New York, when we visit and see this theatre it will stand as a testament to the love Broadway and the world feel for this remarkable composer and these wonderful photographs will also remind us of the joy this honour gave to him.

Everyone really impressed me with their talents you don't get to see on daytime tv! I also wanted to say that the young lady, Melanie, who did the skit was so fun to watch. If she can do drama as easily as acting in front of all those people, she would make a great addition to one of the shows!...If she isnt already on one?? Also, Natalie Hall (Colby) was so impressive! She should audition for an full Broadway show!

Alice Toklas - People travel millions of miles each year to reach the Museum d'Orsay but the Pew Trusts want you to believe that People won't travel 5 miles to a suburb of Philadelphia to see The Barnes. The Barnes is a living window back into the Roaring 20's. A visit to The Barnes in its cathedral like arboretum and world class gardens is like a trip through an American looking glass. The Merion Experience is like a time capsule, a 20th Century Monticello. It is a travesty to dismantle The Barnes in Merion and the McMove is an affront to the People of America & America's Cultural Pride & Integrity. There are many ways to make The Barnes more 'accessible' in its Merion home including providing shuttle buses from a central orientation center, but access is ONLY a PRETEXT. Rich Philadelphians want to move The Barnes to Philly to try to glorify Philly's otherwise 2nd rate collections at the Philly Art Museum- isn't that what this is really all about? They could have spent the McMove Money piecing together a Great American Collection but they don't seem to have the hutzpah & the know how. ARE YOU BARNES EXPERIENCED? STOP THE MOVE!! Paul T - Sorry to be a bore and all that.... We first saw Spring Awakening at the Lyric Hammersmith on Thursday 29th January and saw it four more times there (including the last night). We were at the opening night at the Novello (Saturday 21st March) and saw it a total of 18 times including the last night Saturday May 30th - I think that it actually ran for ten weeks in the West End. Sadly if finished just before all the young people finished their exams and maybe would have come and supported the show? Spring Awakening won four Olivier Awards: Best Sound Design: SPRING AWAKENING Best Supporting Performance in a Musical or Entertainment: Iwan Rheon for SPRING AWAKENING Best Actor in a Musical or Entertainment: Aneurin Barnard for SPRING AWAKENING Best New Musical: SPRING AWAKENING It was an amazing show with a fantastic cast.

There are only three really positive reviews in the press, and out of them the one points out that it is not a hit and there are lot of low parts in it. I saw it, thanks god it was free for me, cause my friend bought the tickets and the show is terrible, many people were actually laughing at all those cheesy love parts and when Chrsitine kicked the bucket also. Terry - This is so fascinating. So Exactly where did Miss. Anne Frank get Pen and Paper in a German "Death Camp", to write her diary? And didn't the Nuremberg trials conclude that the evil Germans killed all the children and women upon arrival to the camps? That is, They arrived at the camps, less than an hour later they were all dead and buried. So where did she find the time to write Her diary? A new memoir about Anne Frank says that she told Fairy Tales to the little kids at the "Death Camp" to keep their spirits high! It appears that she wasn't the only one telling fairy tales when it comes to the Holocaust.

David - There is no way this would happen. The cost would be enormous, the sets are being used elsewhere in the world and would have to be re-built, and if it didn't attract enough audience members with its all-round 5-star reviews last time, it isn't likely that these awards will change that particularly. Remember, however big a deal the Oliviers are within the theatre community, the wider public doesn't have that much awareness of them. Award wins do help extend the runs of shows that are still running, but you couldn't revive an entire production based on them. It's too much of a risk.

Rosie Percy - horribly speculative and it's making me horrendously hopeful..! after the 3 olivier wins and the public attention it's gathered is not only further proof of what an amazing production spring awakening is, but has also further demonstrated the public demand for it to return to the west end. however, say that hypothetically spring awakening is to return, there is one burning question on my lips.. will they keep the original cast? there is a slight chance that they could be too old to play the part, but after being recognised by oliviers, it couldn't be any other way!

Lets hope Gerry will be approached to do a film version of Love never Dies, he and Emmy are the best two to carry the storyline across, pure emotion and feeling was shown in the Phantom Of The Opera Film and it would be a shame not to let these two great people carry the story on.

Pat - I'm sorry, but I loved Gerry as the Phantom. This was the first movie that I saw Gerry in and it's always been my favorite! The critics gave him a hard time...don't know why? I thought his voice was wonderful as did Andrew Lloyd Webber. He said up front that he always wanted a Phantom with a rock and roll quality to his voice....and he got it with Gerry. I've heard Gerry say in a couple interviews that he probably wouldn't be approached for any sequel. I think the man listened to all those negative reviews and not what most of us thought about his wonderful performance!

BWW INTERVIEWS: Lorraine Burroughs And David Harewood of The Mountaintop At The OLIVIERS 2010 2010/0
Posted: 3/23/2010
Bernell Sylvester - I fully endorse everything that Lorraine and David have said. The Mountaintop is a simplistic genius of a play, the only fault is that I don't believe there will "EVER" be another couple of actors able to deliver the story like them, their synergy and passion. To perform a two hander at such short notice in a tiny pub, and receive such incredible rave reviews, deserved full industry recognition. What a pity they will not be educating the Americans on how to portray Katori's icon MLK. I do hope they are recognised and rewarded for being so instrumental in launching this play on Broadway. Bertie "B" ..an admiring fan!!

Karen - It has to be a theatre in-joke, or blatant - I don't know. How can you compare the two? I was a teenager during the 80's and cut my musical teeth on Les Mis along with endless listens to Phantom, Aspects of Love, and Sunset. Then I developed my musical appreciation skills further as I grew up and realized that the repetitiveness and frankly boring simplicity of Webber's music wasn't doing it for me. I studied opera, and didn't listen to any Sondheim until Into the Woods (I was still young!). But until the Assassins revival and the Sweeney Todd, I didn't "get it". I know almost everything, including things like The Frogs (not my favorite) and I've only put off Sunday In the Park - I know I have heard most of the songs especiailly a few famous ones; but the poor man is 80, was panned when ever he released a musical, and only now is being inundated with the praise (and a bit of money for the shows) he could have used then. And everyone wants more, more from him. As much as I love him, and hope that the Wiseguys or Bounce or whatever title is is now comes off, I think Sondheim probably knows better than all of us that first Disney, and the jukebox musical dumbed it all down for a few years, but also reminded people of musical theatre's existence. Then Rent and Wicked came along and brought in the teens and younger adults by the masses, as much as some older Sondheim traditionalists loathed it. Now in the days of Next to Normal, Spring Awakening, and Jason Robert Brown, (and [title of show]!), all of which I also love, where would a big old fashioned show fit? Plus he does get to retire. Oh well. He's been the "Spring Awakening" or "Rent" or whatever show is controversial, for most of his career; Company was completely different than anything before it, Sweeney, on and on. I'm glad for those who enjoy Webber, he has a few good tunes and knows how to swell an orchestra; plus you can leave humming (you can't *help* it after that many repeats). But I hope people really give otehr styles a chance. It's work, like learning to like opera, but we can "appreciate" the new stuff and the classics Sondheim gave us. :) Karen
