On The Town in Broadway ON THE TOWN
Circle Theatre
9/6-9/22/2018
On The Town, the energetic wartime comedic musical about three sailors on a 24-hour leave in New York City, features thrilling music by Leonard Bernstein with playful lyrics and book by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Goofy and flirtatious Ozzie is looking for a date, and studious innocent Chip, guidebook in hand, has several days’ worth of tourist attractions to check off his list. But when idealistic Gabey falls for the photograph of lovely Miss Turnstiles, a subway beauty queen, they all join in an ambitious scavenger hunt around the city to locate this dream girl -- and, on the way, find all of the romance, adventure, and New York atmosphere for which they could wish. The show’s celebrated score written by the composer of West Side Story includes a number of musical theatre standards, like “Come Up to My Place,” “I Can Cook, Too,” “Some Other Time,” and “New York, New York.”

School of Rock in Broadway SCHOOL OF ROCK
Wharton Center [Cobb Great Hall]
9/18-9/23/2018
Based on the hit film, this hilarious new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. While teaching these pint-sized prodigies what it means to truly rock, Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful, but uptight headmistress, helping her rediscover the wild child within. (The New York Times says, “BE WARNED! There’s a love story in this one.”) Featuring 14 new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and all the original songs from the movie, this high-octane smash delivers face-melting guitar riffs and touching romance in equally awesome doses! The Daily News cheers, ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER “AWAKENS THE EMPOWERING MESSAGE OF ROCK!” and Time Out New York raves, “SCHOOL’s in – FOREVER!”

The Totalitarians in Broadway THE TOTALITARIANS
Theatre Nova
9/7-9/30/2018
Politician Penelope Easter is a disaster of a candidate: impulsive and crass, with a closet full of skeletons. When she enlists the help of Francine, a silver-tongued political operative, the two embark on a madcap journey of sex, money, complete misrepresentation of facts, and a total lack of scruples - on their way to political fame. Only time (and a mysterious stranger bent on revolution) will tell if their ends justify their means, or if justice will find them in the end. This raucous dark comedy lampoons “reality politics,” the state of modern discourse, and life in a post-truth world. Directed by Carla Milarch.

Wittenberg in Broadway WITTENBERG
Detroit Mercy Theatre Company
9/28-10/14/2018
Detroit Mercy Theatre Company opens its 2018-2019 season with the Michigan premiere of WITTENBERG by David Davalos, September 28 – October 14 at The Marlene Boll Theatre inside the Boll Family YMCA – Downtown Detroit. It is October 1517 and the start of another fall semester at the University of Wittenberg. Hamlet (senior, Class of 1518), John Faustus (professor, philosophy) and Martin Luther (professor, theology) find themselves at personal and professional crossroads. Hamlet returns from his summer break suffering from metaphysical trauma and a crisis of faith. The overlapping and intertwining saga of these three men could decisively alter the course of each other’s lives. WITTENBERG is a revealing comedy about the story behind the stories of Hamlet, Doctor Faustus and the Protestant Reformation. Directed by Professor of Theatre, Arthur J. Beer, Ph.D., the Detroit Mercy Theatre Company’s cast — a collective of artists composed of faculty, guest artists and students from the University of Detroit Mercy acting program — includes professionals Jonathan Davidson as Dr. Faustus and Dale Dobson as Martin Luther. A Little Night Music in Broadway A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC
The Encore Musical Theatre Company
9/20-10/14/2018
The Encore Musical Theatre Company proudly presents A Little Night Music, running September 20th through October 14th, 2018. A Little Night Music is directed and choreographed by Matthew Brennan and music directed by Dr. Joseph D. Daniel. A Little Night Music is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and book by Hugh Wheeler. The script was originally produced and directed on Broadway by Hal Prince. A Little Night Music follows the relationships between members of the wealthy class in Sweden at the turn of the 20th Century. At the heart of the story is Fredrik Egerman, a middle-aged lawyer married to his second wife, the naive yet beautiful Anne, with a son from his first marriage, the gloomy Henrik. Fredrik’s world is turned around when an old flame, the famed actress Desiree Armfeldt, finds her way back into his life. The situation grows increasingly complicated as Desiree’s jealous (and married) lover, Count Carl-Magnus, receives word of the reunion. The story comes to a head when Desiree convinces her mother, Madame Armfeldt, to invite Fredrik and his family to her lavish country estate for a weekend - an affair that the Count invites himself and his manic depressive wife, Charlotte, to, as well. Winner of four Tony Awards, this is a musical work that has forever entranced the world of theatre. Songs include “The Glamorous Life”, “A Weekend in the Country”, “The Miller’s Son”, and the extraordinary “Send in the Clowns”. The Encore’s production stars Jay Montgomery (Fredrik Egerman) and Kristina Riegle (Desiree Armfeldt); with Emily Hadick (Anne Egerman), Clayton Sallee (Henrik Egerman), Sebastian Gerstner (Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm), Leah Fox (Charlotte Malcolm/Associate Music Director), Anne Bauman (Madame Armfeldt), Olivia Goosman (Fredrika Armfeldt at certain performances), Maryanna Lauter (Fredrika Armfeldt at certain performances), Sarah B.
