SHINBONE ALLEY in Broadway SHINBONE ALLEY
Third Avenue Playhouse
7/26-9/2/2018
SHINBONE ALLEY (the story of archy and mehitabel) July 26 – September 1 By Mel Brooks and Joe Darion Music by George Kleinsinger Lyrics by Joe Darion Directed by James Valcq Featuring a book by comedy legend Mel Brooks and Joe Darion, and a “cool” jazz score that remains one of the only examples of this genre in the commercial theatre, SHINBONE ALLEY was one of the most daring musicals of the 1950’s. This off-beat musical has appeared in almost every form, including a record and a concert with Carol Channing, a Broadway musical with Eartha Kitt, a television special with Tammy Grimes and, eventually an animated film. In a deserted office, a cockroach dives headfirst onto the keys of a typewriter, pouring out the ruminations of his soul. It’s “archy” (he’s too small to hold down the shift key), poet, philosopher, moralist and hapless friend of “mehitabel”, the alley cat. This bizarre, highly original musical takes us into the streets of the big city as archy tries hopelessly to bring the “toujours gai” mehitabel off the back fence and into a respectable home as a housecat. This will be a rare chance to see a true forgotten gem of Broadway’s Golden Age.

This Prison Where I Live in Broadway THIS PRISON WHERE I LIVE
Theater RED
8/23-9/9/2018
Continuing their 2018 season, Theater RED revisits the 19th century’s most cherished Shakespearean actor, Edwin Booth, for another Milwaukee premiere. Written and directed by Angela Iannone, and featuring Theater RED alumni and Chicago-based actor and playwright Jared McDaris, “This Prison Where I Live” marks the second collaboration between Theater RED and Iannone as a playwright and director, after 2015’s critically acclaimed The Seeds of Banquo. This Prison Where I Live recalls Edwin Booth, the first superstar celebrity in the world of theater, as he rehearses his production of Shakespeare’s Richard the Second. As he readies himself to play, the ghosts of his past, including that of his notorious brother, interrupt his rehearsals with their own requests and mock the crown of America’s “Prince of Players.” The run of This Prison Where I Live will last three weeks, with performances at 7:30pm on August 24th, 25th, 29th, 30th, and 31st and September 6th, 7th and 8th and matinee performances at 2:00pm on August 26th and September 9th. All performances will take place at the Tenth Street Theatre (home to In Tandem Theatre), located at 628 N 10th St, Milwaukee, WI 53233. The lobby offers refreshments during intermission, and before and after the show. Running time is around two hours, including a fifteen minute intermission.
