Hockey--The Musical! in Broadway HOCKEY--THE MUSICAL!
Wharton Center
8/24-8/26/2017
Noted author, columnist, and playwright Mitch Albom again takes us into the world of musical comedy with his irresistible farce Hockey - The Musical! Now in its second season after a hugely successful eight-week run in Detroit in summer 2016, Hockey - The Musical! is described by Albom himself as "Spamalot - with hockey sticks." This is sure to draw theater and sports fans alike. When God decides there are too many sports in the world, he chooses to eliminate one of them - hockey. But that doesn't sit well with fans of the underdog game. So God says that if five pure-of-heart souls can plead their case to save their beloved sport, he'll reconsider. Watch the hilarity unfold as five misfits sing and dance their way toward saving hockey in this raucous, bawdy, foot-tapping musical, an Albom original.

POPCORN FALLS
Riverbank Theatre
8/18-8/27/2017
Broadway comes to Marine City in Popcorn Falls. Directed by two-time Tony Award winner Christian Borle and written by accomplished Broadway actor and playwright James Hindman. Broadway actor and playwright, James Hindman stars in his new production, Popcorn Falls at our very own Snug Theatre! James' Broadway and touring acting credits include such hits as Cats, City of Angels, and most recently Mary Poppins. Fellow Broadway actor Tom Souhrada, who is just completing the national tour of Kinky Boots, will join James as the two actors portray over a dozen characters in this fast-paced comedy farce that celebrates small town can-do spirit. Welcome to Popcorn Falls, a small American town, whose only claim to fame - their namesake waterfall - has dried up. Now bankrupt, their last chance is a large grant that can only be used if the town produces a play in a week. Led by the Mayor and the local handyman, the enterprising townsfolk try to rise to the challenge and prove that art can save the world. Following the Theatre Nova production of Popcorn Falls, Jen McKee of Encore Michigan says, “And that’s what a play like Popcorn Falls boils down to: the magic of watching two actors stretch themselves into multiple roles before your eyes. We’re now in a moment of great anxiety at the national level, of course; and art of all kinds has the amazing power to simultaneously distract us and re-focus us in unexpected ways. So if a light night of theater is what your soul craves, consider Popcorn Falls”

The Revolutionists in Broadway THE REVOLUTIONISTS
Theatre NOVA
8/25-9/17/2017
Theatre NOVA, Ann Arbor’s professional theatre with an exclusive focus on new plays and playwrights, presents the Michigan premiere of “The Revolutionists” by Lauren Gunderson. Four beautiful, bad-ass women lose their heads in this irreverent, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution. At the height of the Reign of Terror, activist playwright Olympe de Gouges, young assassin Charlotte Corday, revolutionary Caribbean spy Marianne Angelle and former queen Marie Antoinette hang out, plot murder and try to beat back extremist insanity in Paris. This political fantasia by the author of I and You considers how far we should go to keep society from sliding off of the rails. “The Revolutionists” features Diane Hill, Melissa Beckwith, K Edmonds, and Sara Rose and is directed by David Wolber. The design team includes Forrest Hejkal (scenic and costume design), Carla Milarch (sound design), and Dan Walker (lighting design). This grand and dream-tweaked comedy is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how we actually go about changing the world. It is a true story. Or total fiction. Or a play about a play. Or a raucous resurrection… that ends with a song and a scaffold.
