He won Outstanding Director - Musical at the Drama Desk Awards for both Assassins and Wicked. Mantello also earned the Best Direction of a Musical Tony Award for Assassins. For his play direction, he won Outstanding Director - Play at the Drama Desk Awards for Take Me Out, along with Outstanding Director of a Play from the Outer Critics Circle Awards and Outstanding Director from The Lortels for the same production.
