New Big Band to Premiere 7/4 on the Parkway

The new Philly POPS BIG Band will perform its first two shows on July 4 during the Wawa Welcome America Festival. At 10 a.m., the ensemble will play at the City of Philadelphia's July 4 Celebration of Freedom ceremony and parade on Independence Mall. At 7 p.m., the BIG Band will open the city's Wawa Welcome America July 4th Concert and fireworks show on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. NBC10 and Telemundo62 will televise both performances. This venerable musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Roger O. Hirson opened on Broadway in 1972 under the brilliant direction of Bob Fosse and went on to receive 5 Tony Awards and 4 Drama Desk awards the following year. Frank Baum ever imagined there would be an afterlife to his children's book 'The Wizard of Oz,' but in 1939 MGM capitalized on book's wide appeal and their film version has became a staple in every child's movie experience.
