BACH GOLDBERG VARIATIONS: THE ART OF TRANSCRIPTION FEATURING
Mesa Arts Center, Piper Repertory Theater
10/22-10/22/2015
Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations has become an iconic monument in Western music. On one level, it's simply a beautiful keyboard work, and on another, it's a Rubik's Cube of invention and architecture. (NPR’s Tom Huizenga). Legendary violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky’s ground-breaking arrangement changes the landscape of how Bach’s music is perceived. This historic arrangement for string-trio will be performed by violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky, violist Scott Rawls, and cellist Zuill Bailey.

BALLET FOLKLORICO DE MEXICO DE AMALIA HERNANDEZ
Mesa Arts Center, Ikeda Theater
10/23-10/23/2015
Dance -that form of expression of human sensitivity which involves the confluence of rhythm, bodily movement, and music- is both ancient and deeply engrained in Mexico and its history. Since it first appeared in these lands, dance has been associated to religious tradition and social and art movements greatly relevant in our history. Throughout time, the evolution of dance brought about the appearance of different forms of popular dances which constitute the roots of tradition and folklore. The cast of the most relevant dance creators of the last century includes the name of Amalia Hernandez. She was inspired by the essence of Mexican folklore and she recreated those dances using different techniques from modern and classical dance; she then brought her creations to the stage transforming them into a show, with amazing results. The artistic creativity and effort of Amalia Hernandez was materialized in the establishment of the Folkloric Ballet of Mexico, and its dance school for the training of professional dancers. Established over six decades ago, this Ballet has represented Mexico in the most renowned stages. It has been able to reach great audiences –both Mexican and foreign- with its wide repertoire and it has brought to them the aesthetic manifestations that are most profoundly rooted in our folklore, allowing the Ballet to sensitize those audiences emotionally and intellectually. The Ballet is constituted by a large team that gathers specialists from different fields: dancers, composers, singers, costume and set designers, musicians, among others. The quality and effort of this team has earned the Ballet a number of awards in Mexico and overseas. In its capacity of artistic ambassador of Mexico, the Folkloric Ballet of Mexico has transmitted the Mexican ‘feel’ around the world. Since 1961, when the Ballet was awarded in Paris with the first prize of the Festival of Nations in the category of dance groups, it is difficult to determine precisely how many performances have taken place –both during tours and in our home theatre, the Palace of Fine Arts- and how many awards have been received. We offer a well deserved tribute to our founder, dancer and choreographer, Amalia Hernandez.
