Joshua Henry

Joshua Henry made his professional acting debut in 2006 as Judas/John the Baptist in a production of Godspell at Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. In 2007, he appeared in the ensemble of the Off-Broadway production of In the Heights at 37 Arts Theatre, understudying the role of Benny. He returned to the production when it transferred to Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2008. That year, he also appeared as Thomas in Serenade at Teatro LATEA. In 2009, he performed in Swing, understudied Benny in In the Heights, and portrayed the Tin Man in The Wiz as part of New York City Center's Encores! series. He also appeared in a regional production of American Idiot at Berkeley Repertory Theatre before joining the musical's original Broadway cast at the St. James Theatre in 2010, playing Favorite Son and appearing in the ensemble. He returned to the production in 2011.

Henry joined the Broadway cast of The Scottsboro Boys, directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, playing Haywood Patterson at the Lyceum Theatre in 2010. His performance earned him a 2011 Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. He reprised the role in a 2013 production at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. In 2011, he also appeared as Jake in the American Repertory Theater production of Porgy and Bess, which transferred to Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2012. Additional theater credits include Bring It On: The Musical (2012), in which he performed the "Cross the Line" solo; Violet (2013), as Flick at New York City Center's Encores! series, and its 2014 Broadway production at the American Airlines Theatre; and a 2013 workshop of Hamilton at Vassar College, in which he originated the roles of Hercules Mulligan, James Madison and King George III.

In 2015, Henry portrayed Jim Conley in a concert production of Parade at Lincoln Center. He played Noble Sissle in the Broadway production of Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed in 2016. That same year, he starred as Jamie Wellerstein in a benefit concert production of The Last Five Years at The Town Hall. From 2016 to 2017, he played Aaron Burr in the Chicago production of Hamilton at the CIBC Theatre, reprising the role for the musical's first U.S. national tour, including performances at the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco and the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles.

Henry starred as Billy Bigelow in the 2018 Broadway revival of Carousel at the Imperial Theatre, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. In 2019, he appeared as Duran in The Wrong Man at MCC Theater. In 2021, he played Dr. Jim Pomatter in the Broadway revival of Waitress at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. He also appeared as William in The Tap Dance Kid as part of New York City Center's Encores! series in 2022. That year, he joined the Broadway revival of Into the Woods as Rapunzel's Prince at the St. James Theatre, performing in the production until its closing in January 2023. In 2023, he co-wrote and starred in The Conversation as He in a workshop at Power Station at BerkleeNYC, also serving as composer and lyricist. He later reprised the project in its Off-Broadway production at the Astor Place Theatre, scheduled to run from November 2026 through 2027, playing Marcus and again serving as composer and lyricist.

In 2024, Henry portrayed Coalhouse Walker Jr. in a production of Ragtime at New York City Center. He reprised the role in the Broadway revival at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, which began performances in 2025 and is scheduled to run through August 2026. His performance earned him his first Tony Award and a Drama League Award.

Henry made his film debut in Sex and the City (2008), playing Will. His additional film credits include Winter's Tale (2014), as Gravesman, Renegades (2017), as Ben Moran, In the Heights (2021), in which he provided background vocals in a cameo appearance, and tick, tick... BOOM! (2021), in which he portrayed Roger. He also appeared as Brownie McGhee in a cameo in A Complete Unknown (2024).

His television credits include Kings (2009), as a soldier in Jack's troop, and Nip/Tuck (2010), as Wilber. In 2013, he appeared as Quincy in nine episodes of Army Wives. He portrayed Aaron Burr in the 2017 episode "The Shucker" of Curb Your Enthusiasm. From 2019 to 2021, he played Jerlamarel in the television series See, appearing in four episodes. In 2022, he portrayed Gaston in the television special Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration. His additional television work includes voicing Demon Saytar in the 2023 episode "Ballmastrz: Rubicon" of Ballmastrz: 9009.

In addition to his acting work, Henry has contributed to several musical projects. He performed in the concert Party Worth Crashing in 2008 and was featured on Dare to Go Beyond: The Album, released by nonprofit organization R.Evolución Latina in 2010. In 2011, he performed in Kait Kerrigan and Bree Lowdermilk's You Made This Tour concert at the Laurie Beechman Theatre and participated in the 92nd Street Y's Lyrics & Lyricists event honoring Burton Lane. He released his EP Guarantee in February 2021, followed by his debut album, Grow, in September 2021. In December 2022, he released the single "Can't Nobody Tell Us Nothin'." In October 2024, he appeared on Eisa Davis and Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical concept album Warriors, performing the role of Wanya of The Bizzies.
