The Daughter of the Regiment in Broadway THE DAUGHTER OF THE REGIMENT
Light Opera of New Jersey
3/23-3/24/2018
Light Opera of New Jersey will present its second production of its 23rd Season of operetta and musical theater featuring humor and heroism, with Gaetano Donizetti’s “The Daughter of the Regiment,” under the direction of Jamie Baer Peterson and Lauran Corson with musical direction by Michael Avagliano. Most young men are nervous to meet their girlfriend’s father for the first time, but imagine if your girlfriend had 1,500 fathers and every single one of them had a rifle. The Daughter of the Regiment tells the story of Marie, a strong young woman who was found on a battlefield just after being born and raised by an entire French Regiment as one of their own. She falls in love with Tonio, a young Swiss man, while the regiment is invading the Tyrols during the Napoleonic wars. Tonio and Marie must prove their love to the whole regiment in this comic opera with many amusing twists and turns. Making a return to the LONJ stage, Chelsea Friedlander brings the title role of Marie to life. Making his LONJ premier, Ivan Rivera plays Tonio and takes on one of the most challenging tenor arias in opera history. David Murray and Hanne Dollase are veterans of the LONJ stage and play Sergeant Sulpice and the Marquise of Birkenfeld, respectively. Jimmy Smith, who recently appeared in LONJ’s Pattermania, plays Hortensius, the faithful servant of the Marquise and Beth Gleason plays the Duchess of Kracckenthorp. LONJ takes great pride in gathering strong and talented ensembles to create its signature “wall of sound,” and members of the regiment include Jordan Wilhelm, Mike Baruffi, Zachary Morehouse, Frank Skokan, Will Roper, Rick Morley, and John Lamb. Members of Central Jersey Symphony Orchestra led by Michael Avagliano will bring Donizetti’s score to life. “Daughter” will be presented in English at 8 p.m. on March 23 and 24, at St Mark’s Episcopal Church in Basking Ridge. LONJ is a premier operetta, opera, and musical theater company founded in 1995 by William Corson, executive director, and Lauran Corson, artistic director. Doubt: A Parable in Broadway DOUBT: A PARABLE
The Strollers
3/16-3/24/2018
The Strollers community theater continues its 86th season with a presentation of Doubt, A Parable, the award-winning drama by John Patrick Shanley. The Pulitzer Prize-winning drama will be performed for two weekends in March at the Burgdorff Center for Performing Arts in Maplewood, NJ. As relevant today as ever, Doubt delves into the murky shadows of moral certainty, challenging each of us to separate perception from reality. Set in 1964, just after Vatican II, Doubt takes us within the halls of a Catholic school and tells the story of a suspicion. The strident Sister Aloysius, both head of the school and subordinate of the newly arrived Father Flynn—her junior in both years and experience, is determined to protect the children in her charge as well as her own position in a new power struggle now in play. When her attention is drawn to Father Flynn’s interest in one particular student, Sister Aloysius must investigate, drawing in novice Sister James and the boy’s mother. Each with motives of his or her own, the players in this tense drama are forced to weigh the value of truth against the burden of consequence. But does truth have any weight at all when it is shrouded in doubt? Doubt features a cast that includes Cynthia S. Ross as Sister Aloysius, Jason Kruk as Father Flynn, Margaret Mikkelsen as Sister James, and Alice Holloway as Mrs. Muller. The production is directed by Robert Pape and stage managed by JoAnne Hankey; in addition, both Pape and Hankey are serving as producers. Set design is by Kate McNally, lighting design by John Mendlovitz, and costumes by Judy French. Doubt is being presented for two weekends at the Burgdorff Center for Performing Arts in Maplewood: Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17 at 8:00 pm, Sunday, March 18 at 2:00 pm, and Friday, March 23 and Saturday, March 24 at 8:00 pm. The Wedding Singer in Broadway THE WEDDING SINGER
Colts Neck High School Theatre
3/16-3/24/2018
In THE WEDDING SINGER, it's 1985 and rock-star wannabe Robbie Hart is New Jersey's favorite wedding singer. He's the life of the party, until his own fiancee leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. Enter Julia, a winsome waitress who wins his affection. Only trouble is Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark, and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever. With a brand new score that pays loving homage to the pop songs of the 1980's, THE WEDDING SINGER takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room.
