The Swords of Sorrow- Burai II in Broadway THE SWORDS OF SORROW- BURAI II
Edgemar Center for the Arts
7/6-7/22/2018
Women warriors will wield weapons in the climactic scene of The Swords of Sorrow- BURAI II, as obligations of honor and duty are fulfilled with the blades of flashing swords in this action-packed story set in 19th Century feudal Japan. Takeshige, chamberlain of the Matsugoe clan and master of the Shintou Eigou Style of sword combat, is unjustly sentenced to death after his master Lord Tagami has been captured. Daiji, the local executioner, slays Takeshige and his wife, but with his dying breath, Takeshige swears vengeance from beyond the grave, stating “Even if my body gets rotten, my soul shall live to take your life.” Takeshige exacts bloody revenge as his ghost possesses and dominates the bodies of others. The ghost begins to leave a trail of bloody corpses. Kaede, Takeshige’s younger sister, is rendered homeless after her brother’s death. She is taken in by Natsu, Daiji’s younger sister, who does not immediately know of Kaede’s connection to Takeshige. Takeshige’s ghost compels Kaede to confront Natsu in mortal combat. The stage is set for an epic sword battle. One of them must die. Whom shall it be? Naoki Fujiyama is playwright, director and producer.

An international collection of writers, from the U.S.A., United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand, have conjured eight new short works for the stage in a show called The Road-Trip Monologues. As the title implies, travel is a component of each piece, and each is played by a single performer. Crossing the Bridge. By James Balian (Australia). A wager involving a driving challenge and a classic white Lincoln creates an indelible memory for a man traveling with his brother and father. Roller Coaster. By Lesley Asistio (USA). A Filipina-American girl’s father takes the family on a road trip in an attempt to distract her mother from her romance with another woman. New Girl. By Roger Vickery (Australia). A Holocaust survivor tells of her postwar migration to Australia, to give her grandson’s prospective bride hope. Hope for Us All. By Doc Andersen-Bloomfield (U.K.) A Black woman on a business trip finds herself in Charlottesville on its historic day of turmoil. Boot’s Vacation. By Rex McGregor (New Zealand). Boot, a skateboarder, visits cities in several countries until he finds his personal paradise in New York. Medea’s Medea. By Chas Belov (USA). The Medea of legend has traveled across the seas and survived thousands of years, to now find herself confined because of one of her violent acts. Hypocrites and Strippers. By Kim Yaged (USA). Jyl, a lesbian who has broken up with a stripper, drives across the country only to meet….another stripper. The Road-Trip Monologues are performed by the actors of the Raw Bites ’18 ensemble, comprised of Schafer Bourne, Emma Chelsey, Kenlyn Kanouse, Henry Kemp, Juliet Ladines, Nina Sallinen, Laura Walker and Sonya Wallace. Jane Edwina Seymour directs The Road-Trip Momologues.

Zephyr Theatre

"The Door To America" by Carol Weiss, is a musical story of immigrants. This is the story of an adventure. After all, what could be a greater adventure than picking up all you own and moving to a land 3,000 miles away - a place impossible to believe – streets paved with gold and freedom! Yossel the tailor brings his wife to America hoping they’ll succeed, but, like thousands of others, he works in a sweatshop. He tries to start his own shop, gets laughed at by bankers, fights with the very union he helped create, and almost loses his business and his wife. He struggles but his road to success create a musical event, alternately touching, triumphant, and joyous.

The Humans in Broadway THE HUMANS
Ahmanson Theatre
6/19-7/29/2018
The angst, anguish and amity of the American middle class are first coaxed - then shoved - into the light in this uproarious, hopeful, and heart-breaking play that takes place over the course of a family dinner on Thanksgiving. Breaking with tradition, Erik Blake has brought his Pennsylvania family to celebrate and give thanks at his daughter's apartment in lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside the ramshackle pre-war duplex, and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the Blake clan's deepest fears and greatest follies are laid bare. Our modern age of anxiety is keenly observed, with humor and compassion, in this new American classic.

Higher & Higher: The Jackie Wilson Story in Broadway HIGHER & HIGHER: THE JACKIE WILSON STORY
Hologram USA
6/7-7/31/2018
Jackie Wilson is resurrected via state-of-the-art hologram technology to sing classic hits (like "Higher & Higher") and live out the highs and tragic lows of his life story. Wilson was the RnB star who invented the stage presence that Elvis Presley, James Brown and Michael Jackson would learn so much from. Caught up in the corruption of the record business at the time--and his own vices for sex and drugs--Wilson finally slipped into a coma, with Elvis and M.J. paying his last hospital bills. The show presents Jackie, known as Mr. Excitement, in all his glory though--a powerful voice, who helped invent Rock and Roll.

The Death and Life of Mary Jo Kopechne in Broadway THE DEATH AND LIFE OF MARY JO KOPECHNE
Odyssey Theatre
6/28-8/12/2018
The Death and Life of Mary Jo Kopechne tells the story of an American tragedy from the point of view of the victim – a young woman who became famous one night in 1969 when the car she was in plunged off a bridge on Martha’s Vineyard on the way back from a midnight tryst on the beach. A prominent United States senator who’d had too much to drink was at the wheel. He survived. She didn’t. Mary Jo Kopechne was a Democratic campaign worker and idealist with ambitions of running for the Pennsylvania State Assembly. A demure Catholic with little experience with men, she was not the type to have an impulsive sexual adventure with a married man. But does she say no to a man of considerable power and influence, a man who could help advance her career, a man she also may have admired? A dilemma that has become particularly prominent in the #MeToo era we are living through. In his hotel room Ted Kennedy is frantically trying to devise some way out of this potentially career-ending disaster when his two dead brothers and his father miraculously show up to help him try to salvage not only his political future but the family’s reputation. They are deep in damage control scenarios when there is a knock at the door. They open it to discover Mary Jo Kopechne standing there. Soaking wet. And very angry. The Kennedys try desperately to persuade her to help them cover up the incident. The decision that she has to make in the next few hours will determine not only Ted Kennedy’s fate but also that of the entire nation, perhaps for decades to come. What will she do? Written by Peter Lefcourt. Directed by Terri Hanauer.

Cooped up on maternity leave and eager for conversation, Jessie invites the funny and forthright Lina for coffee in their neighboring backyards. Screwball Comedy in Broadway SCREWBALL COMEDY
Theatre 40
7/19-8/19/2018
The title Screwball Comedy refers to an American genre of story-telling which had its heyday in the 1930s and 1940s. The elements included a male and female who may be adversarial at first, but are ultimately ideal for each other; some farcical or slapstick action; a female with the upper hand in the relationship; snappy patter and crackling dialogue. Norm Foster’s Screwball Comedy is both an homage to and an example of the genre. Our story: The year is 1938, and newly laid-off perfumier, Mary Hayes is trying to break into the male dominated world of newspaper journalism. Editor-In-Chief Bosco Godfrey sets a competition between his egotistical star reporter Jeff Kincaid and plucky Mary assigning them to cover a society wedding. If Jeff writes the better story, he gets to keep his job. If Mary wins, she will replace the ace newshound. Super-rich lady Delores suspects that her son Chauncey’s fiancée Gloria is a fortune hunter and wants the reporters to expose her. Chauncey is not the brightest bulb in the chandelier, and Delores suspects he’s being played for a patsy. Can Jeff or Mary dig up the dirt? Howard Storm directs.

Intensely beautiful, poignant and sublimely funny, this “play for voices” by the great Welsh poet Dylan Thomas recounts the dreams, gossip and waking hours of the sleepy, Welsh seaside town of Llareggub — a name that seems innocent enough until you read it backwards. Unforgettable characters such as Captain Cat, Myfanwy Price, the Reverend Ely Jenkins, Organ Morgan, Polly Garter and Dai Bread populate this odd place, and their affectionate charm and humor still captivate and entertain 65 years after it was written. Gloria Gifford Conservatory
7/7-8/26/2018
Jackie is a former drug dealer out on parole who is trying to stay clean. His girlfriend is coke-addicted Veronica, whom he has loved since 8th grade. Visiting her, he sees a man’s hat in her apartment, a hat that does not belong to him. He surmises who the man might be and visits him with a gun (a violation of Jackie’s parole, among other things). Jackie asks his supportive cousin Julio to hide his gun. Jackie also visits his 12-step sponsor Ralph, whom he believes to be a friend. Ralph ingests healthy food, but his dedication to a clean body belies the fact that, underneath, he is entirely willing to backstab anyone for his personal gain. His unhappy wife Victoria rounds out the cast of characters. Will Jackie reconcile with his true love Veronica? Will he be able to stay out of jail? What will Ralph do? Stephen Adly Guirgis is the playwright. Gloria Gifford directs.

The Blade of Jealousy in Broadway THE BLADE OF JEALOUSY
The Whitefire Theatre
6/24-8/26/2018
World Premiere of Henry Ong's modern adaptation of Spanish Renaissance Playwright Tirso de Molina's "Jealous of Herself." A madcap comedy of disguise and deception set in modern day Los Angeles Dashing Melchor unexpectedly falls in love with a mysterious, completely veiled lady (Magdalena) outside a cathedral, and she with him. He later meets her sans veil but not recognizing her as the lady from the cathedral, is unimpressed, thus igniting Magdalena's jealousy--of herself! This scenario sets the stage for Henry Ong's modern take on a 17th century Spanish play that is surprisingly relevant today, in light of society's obsession with outward beauty and how it relates to self-worth. Adapted from Tirso de Molina’s, “La Celosa De Si Mismo" by Henry Ong from a translation by Harley Erdman Directed by Denise Blasor. Original Music and Sound Design by Longo Chu.
