The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui in Broadway THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI
The FISHTANK
1/20-1/21/2017
Bribery. Hatred. Murder. Blackmail. Power. We could stop him. We won't. Card Table Theatre's Kansas City debut of their all-female production of Brecht's play "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui" combines comedy, horror, spectacle, and pageantry to chart the rise of Capone-ish gangster who is an allegory for Hitler, and uses the tactics of Donald Trump. Card Table Theatre originally produced the play in May 2016, protesting the rise of the Trump candidacy. Since that time, the play has been produced by companies in Boston and New York who recognized the allegory between the rise of the gangster Ui and the Trump presidency. In May, the play was a poignant yet distant warning. However, as it became clear that the now-President-elect had sold America his rhetoric of hate, and that their own frustrations and biases had meshed with his, the comedy took a backseat to the frustration—the slow, horrifying realization that rationality had been hijacked by emotion, that vulgarity had better ratings than calm and rational thought. The world we are in, and the world we now must endure, is a very different one than it was eight months ago, and those that fear autocracy and foreign policy dictated by angry tweets must now heed the warnings this play presents. Though the play is 75 years old, the message is clearer today than ever. If we don't stop the Trumps of the world, they will take power over us. The play is directed by Will Averill, with assistance from James Weber and costume design by Dusty Shaffer. An evening of outrageous comedy that will leave you profoundly unsettled!

Kansas City Actors Theatre introduces Israel Horovitz, an acclaimed but neglected playwright, with this witty, wise and romantic play. When a failed American novelist inherits a luxurious but crumbling Paris apartment, he's sure his fortune has turned ... until he learns that the apartment comes with a nonagenarian tenant and her spinster daughter. "The magic of My Old Lady lies in the preternatural skill with which Mr. Horowitz propels his beautifully drawn characters toward what you trust will be their predestined fates." Terry Teachout, The Wall Street Journal
