The Public Screens Three Shawn & Gregory Films - 8/3/2013

The Public Theater and Theatre for a New Audience will present three special screenings of Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory's most beloved films, Andre Gregory: Before and After Dinner, Vanya on 42nd Street, and My Dinner With Andre, at Joe's Pub at The Public in August. These three screenings are presented as part of the current retrospective, The Wallace Shawn-Andre Gregory Project, celebrating the 40-year collaboration between these two artists.

York Theatre Co. to Present Reading of A GIRL CALLED VINCENT, 8/3 - 8/3/2013

The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Andrew Levine, Executive Director), launches the NEODevelopmental Reading Series with the workshop presentation of the new musical, A Girl Called Vincent, based on the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay, with music written and composed by Carmel Dean, directed by Dick Scanlon and music direction by Charity Wicks. The six-member cast will feature Gerard Canonico, Van Hughes, Tamika Sonja Lawrence, Kelvin Moon Loh, Bonnie Milligan and Dani Shay. A single performance is scheduled for Thursday, August 8, 2013 at 3:00pm.


WICKED Stage Managers Abel & Ney Host One-Day Intensive - 8/4/2013

Following BroadwayWorld's Student Center Classroom two-part series 'Behind the Scenes at Wicked' with Marybeth AbeI, the production stage manager wrote to BWW to tell us that it had drawn 'quite the following of enthusiastic kids'. In response, Abel and her colleague at Wicked Christy Ney will now be offering a Stage Management One Day Intensive on August 4th, 2013.


THE WEIR Extends Through August 4 at Irish Rep - 8/4/2013

Pearl, a new opera in development, was inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, a story of love, condemnation, betrayal and acceptance in which protagonist Hester Prynne secretly conceives a child with the Reverend Dimmesdale. In this modern retelling, Pearl, the child born of the scandal, presents the story from her point of view as an adult woman, a mother and a writer. The story's characters struggle with the central question, "How can love be sin?"

The Headlong and Almeida Theatre's five star sold-out co-production of Lucy Kirkwood's new play Chimericawill transfer to the Harold Pinter Theatre on 6 August for a strictly limited 11 week run with booking to 19 October 2013. Directed by Lyndsey Turner, Chimerica received its world premiere last month at The Almeida Theatre where it has subsequently been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. MAN OF STEEL'S Shannon, Quinto, Lee, Reedus to Appear at Wizard World Chicago Comic Con August 8-11 - 8/8/2013

Man of Steel is the blockbuster hit of the summer, and Michael Shannon, who stars as 'General Zod,' and Zachary Quinto, Star Trek and 'American Horror Story' star, are among the top celebrities scheduled to attend Wizard World Chicago Comic Con, August 8-11 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center. The standout roster will also include Eisner Award Hall of Famer Stan Lee, 'Torchwood' and Zero Dark Thirty headliner John Barrowman, WWE Superstar CM Punk and Norman Reedus of 'The Walking Dead' and Boondock Saints. Wizard World Comic Con events bring together thousands of fans of all ages to celebrate the best in pop-fi, pop culture, movies, graphic novels, comics, toys, video gaming, television, sci-fi, gaming, original art, collectibles, contests and more. Wizard World Chicago Comic Con show hours are Thursday, Aug. 8, 3-8 p.m.; Friday, Aug. 9, noon - 7 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 10, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 11, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Columbus' CAPA Summer Movie Series Debuts Silent Film THE LITTLE AMERICAN - 8/8/2013

Christel Schmidt, an OSU alum now a film historian for the Library of Congress, will give a brief introduction to this year's CAPA Summer Movie Series silent film selection, The Little American (1917), starring 'America's Sweetheart,' Mary Pickford. Schmidt's specialty is the history of silent film with a focus on the life and career of Mary Pickford, and she will provide some insight on the actress, the pre-screening 14-minute fund-raising short for the US' Fourth Liberty Loan Drive in WWI titled One Hundred Percent American (1918) starring Pickford, and the series premiere of this feature film restoration print from the UCLA Film & Television Archive.


The Orpheum to Screen MEAN GIRLS with Memphis Roller Derby, 8/8 - 8/8/2013

Chicago's Music Box Theatre Kicks Off 'The Hitchcock 9' Restored Silent Films - 8/9/2013

Music Box Theatre announces a program of Alfred Hitchcock's silent films, jointly presented by the British Film Institute, Park Circus/ITV and Rialto Pictures. The Hitchcock 9, comprising all of Alfred Hitchcock's surviving silent films from the 1920s, will be shown August 9-13 at Chicago's Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport with newly composed scores performed live by Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra on opening weekend. Additional screenings will be accompanied by Dennis Scott on the Music Box organ.

Movies filmed in New York City that tapped into the turmoil, chaos, and social and cultural energies of the late 1960s and early 1970s are the subject of the screening series Fun City: New York in the Movies 1967-75, curated by film critic and historian J. Hoberman. The series, which will be accompanied by a new monograph written by Hoberman, includes nineteen films, and will be presented by Museum of the Moving Image from August 10 through September 1. The films include established classics such as Rosemary's Baby, The French Connection, Midnight Cowboy, and Dog Day Afternoon, as well as lesser known films such as The Angel Levine, Bye Bye Braverman, and Cotton Comes to Harlem.
