BIO
After moving to New York City, David Hyde Pierce studied at Michael Howard Studios and appeared off-Broadway as Laertes in Hamlet before making his Broadway debut in Beyond Therapy (1982). He gained early television attention as Theodore Van Horne in The Powers That Be (early 1990s).
Pierce achieved his breakthrough as Niles Crane on Frasier (1993–2004). During this period, he appeared in the films Sleepless in Seattle (1993), Nixon (1995), The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human (1999), Wet Hot American Summer (2001), and Down with Love (2003). His voice work included A Bug’s Life (1998), Treasure Planet (2002), Osmosis Jones (2001), Hellboy (2004), Hercules: The Animated Series (1998), and recurring roles on The Simpsons.
He returned to Broadway with Spamalot (2005) and starred as Lt. Frank Cioffi in Curtains (Los Angeles 2006; Broadway 2007). He appeared in La Bête (2010, West End and Broadway) and starred in the film The Perfect Host (2010). His later television and stage work included The Good Wife (2014–2015), Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp (2015), directing It Shoulda Been You (2015) and Ripcord (2015), and appearing in A Life (2016).
In 2017, he appeared in When We Rise, Julie’s Greenroom, and co-starred on Broadway in Hello, Dolly! He starred as Paul Child in Julia (2022– ), appeared in The Visitor (2021) at The Public Theater, and performed in Stephen Sondheim’s Here We Are (2023) at The Shed. In 2025, he is scheduled to star in the Roundabout Theatre Company revival of The Pirates of Penzance (Pirates! The Penzance Musical).
