BWW Review: The Inaugural PHOENICIAN HALF MARATHON in Scottsdale, AZ - An Exquisite Experience to Run Through Luxury
The Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, AZ

Known as the "racecation," the inaugural Phoenician Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K was held at one of the most luxurious resorts in the country. An absolutely breathtaking course that exclusively toured the grounds of the estate for 5Kers, then went on through the Arcadia area with palm-lined streets and citrus groves for 10Kers, and continued along the Canal Trail before finishing at the historic Jokake Inn for Half Marathon runners. The event was limited to the first 1,000 registrants to offer an exclusive and serene experience without all the glitz and fanfare of larger races.

With a start time of 7am, participants enjoyed the added bonus of watching the sun rise over the majestic mountains as they ran through the winding and hilly grounds of the Phoenician Resort golf course. Plenty of water/aid stations were available throughout the race to ensure all runners were well-hydrated. Kudos to the awesome volunteers who woke up early with smiles on their faces to ensure this event ran like precise clockwork. Special shoutout to the young boy who literally sprinted down the street to catch up with me, water in hand, after he missed the exchange at the fuel station!

Post-Race Display

The post-race party was one of the most elegantly impressive in the country. This was not your ordinary bananas and snack-sized pretzels after-party. A full vineyard vines champagne buffet brunch featured various exquisitely displayed stations including mounds of fresh fruit, achiote pulled pork, egg & cheese burritos, roasted poblano-southwestern coleslaw, homemade guacamole and salsa, an assortment of fresh breads and pastries including pepperoni and mozzarella cheese focaccia, various juices, coffee and teas, and a full bar with champagne flowing endlessly. Round tables were luxuriously draped with light blue linens and servers and bartenders were donned in black tie apparel. A live band, Rhythm Edition, took the stage and belted out an eclectic mix of dance tunes, singalongs, and old standards to get the crowd back on their feet after their long run.

Awards were presented approximately two hours after the start time, which acknowledged overall finishers in each category, both male and female. Age group winners also received special awards for their accomplishments. Each finisher, regardless of the event, received a gender-specific technical race shirt, entry to the post-race party, special discounts for accommodations and amenities at the Phoenician Resort, and a one-of-a-kind 4" official finishers medal.
