Miley Cyrus (born Destiny Hope Cyrus on November 23, 1992) is an American singer, songwriter, and actress whose career has been defined by continual artistic reinvention. First gaining prominence as a child performer, she became a global teen idol through her starring role as Miley Stewart on the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana, a franchise that produced multiple chart-topping soundtracks and established her as a major presence in popular culture.
Cyrus launched her solo music career in the late 2000s with the commercially successful albums Meet Miley Cyrus and Breakout, followed by the EP The Time of Our Lives, which included the multi-platinum hit “Party in the U.S.A.” As her career evolved, she pursued a more mature musical direction with Can’t Be Tamed before achieving a major critical and commercial breakthrough with Bangerz, which produced her first Billboard Hot 100 number-one single, “Wrecking Ball.” Her subsequent albums have reflected a wide stylistic range, from the experimental Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz to Younger Now and the rock-influenced Plastic Hearts.
After signing with Columbia Records, Cyrus released Endless Summer Vacation, led by the chart-topping single “Flowers,” which earned multiple Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year. She followed this release with Something Beautiful, a visual album that continued her exploration of music as a multidisciplinary art form.
In addition to her music career, Cyrus has remained active as an actor and television personality, appearing in films such as Bolt, Hannah Montana: The Movie, and The Last Song, and taking on projects ranging from the miniseries Crisis in Six Scenes to a featured role in Black Mirror. She has also served as a coach on The Voice and hosted the televised special Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party.
Across her career, Cyrus has received numerous honors, including multiple Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and MTV Video Music Awards, and has been recognized by Billboard as one of the defining pop artists of the 21st century. Beyond entertainment, she founded the Happy Hippie Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting LGBTQ youth and addressing youth homelessness.
