In May 2006, Katharine McPhee was the runner-up on the fifth season of American Idol. She signed a recording contract with 19 Recordings and RCA Records in 2006. That year, she released the single Somewhere Over the Rainbow/My Destiny (2006) and performed on the American Idol Tour (2006). She recorded duets with Andrea Bocelli on Under the Desert Sky (2006) and later performed with him on multiple televised concerts.
Her self-titled debut album Katharine McPhee was released in 2007, followed by television appearances on Ugly Betty (2007) and the web series lonelygirl15 (2007). She was released from RCA Records in 2008 and appeared in the film The House Bunny (2008). She signed with Verve Forecast Records in 2009 and released her second album Unbroken (2010). During this period, she appeared on CSI: NY (2009), Community (2010), and participated in the charity recording We Are the World 25 for Haiti (2010).
McPhee released the Christmas album Christmas Is the Time to Say I Love You (2010) and later signed with Columbia Records in 2011. She co-starred in the NBC musical drama series Smash (2012–2013) and appeared in Shark Night 3D (2011). Her voice work includes Family Guy (2012). Film roles during this period include You May Not Kiss the Bride (2012) and Peace, Love & Misunderstanding (2012).
She starred as Paige Dineen on the CBS series Scorpion (2014–2018). Her fourth studio album Hysteria was released independently in 2015. She appeared in the Hallmark Hall of Fame film In My Dreams (2014) and the Lifetime film The Lost Wife of Robert Durst (2017).
McPhee released the jazz standards album I Fall in Love Too Easily (2017) and made her Broadway debut starring as Jenna in Waitress (2018), later reprising the role in the West End (2019) and on Broadway again (2019–2020). She starred in the Netflix series Country Comfort (2021) and competed on The Masked Singer (2021).
In 2022, McPhee released the Christmas EP Christmas Songs and launched KMF Jewelry.
