Red Bowl at the Jeffs in Broadway RED BOWL AT THE JEFFS
The Sound
3/30-4/21/2018
The Sound presents: RED BOWL AT THE JEFFS A new play by Beth Hyland Directed by Rebecca Willingham At The Frontier (1106 W. Thorndale Avenue) Tickets: $10 Buy tickets: https://redbowl.brownpapertickets.com/ Online ticket sales close one hour before performances, but tickets can also be purchased at the door. The group of college friends who started Red Bowl Ensemble have been plugging away in the storefront theater scene for years, but now they've finally made it: to the Non-Equity Joseph Jefferson Awards, that is. Loosely inspired by Anton Chekhov's THREE SISTERS, RED BOWL AT THE JEFFS is a raucous tragicomedy about art, ambition, failure, friendship, and making it to Moscow. Directed by Rebecca Willingham Scenic Design by Dana Macel Lighting Design by Alex Beal Costume Design by Elly Hunt Sound Design by Shain Longbehn Graphic Design by Gregory Culley Stage Manager Serena Dully Production Manager Kasey Trouba Assistant Stage Manager Anastar Alvarez Featuring Carter Caldwell, Andrew Cutler, Margaret Kellas, Aaron Latterell, Georgi McCauley, Pernell Myers, Ella Pennington, Faith Servant, and Anne Thompson Visit thesoundchicago.com for more information.

How did four blue-collar kids become one of the greatest successes in pop music history? Find out at Broadway's runaway smash-hit, Jersey Boys. Discover the secret of a 40-year friendship: four blue-collar kids working their way from the streets of Newark to the heights of stardom. And experience electrifying performances of the golden greats that took these guys all the way to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: 'Sherry,' 'Big Girls Don't Cry,' 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You,' 'Dawn,' 'My Eyes Adored You,' and more. The New York Times says, 'The crowd goes wild!' Now a Major Motion Picture! Jersey Boys is directed by Des McAnuff, with book by Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice , music by Bob Gaudio and lyrics by Bob Crewe.

GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES in Broadway GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES
Holmes Student Center, Diversions Lounge
4/26-4/28/2018
Doghouse Ensemble Theatre and Third Onion Productions present GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES by Rajiv Joseph. This heartbreaking comedy bluntly showcases the beauty and pain of friendship. Over the course of 30 years, the lives of Kayleen and Doug intersect at unexpected moments, leading the two childhood friends to compare scars and the physical calamities that draw them together. These pivotal junctures drive them to contemplate the range of human experiences available in the 21st century. The Doghouse/Third Onion production is directed by Julia Steenstra with NIU BFA Acting candidates Zoe Greenwald playing Kayleen and Mikkel Knutson portraying Doug. GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES runs approximately 75 minutes and is not suitable for children under the age of 13. It will be performed in the Diversions lounge of the Holmes Student Center from April 26th through April 28th at 7:30pm. There will be a talkback following the performance on April 27th. Tickets are $3.50 at the door, cash or venmo accepted, please. Donations above the price of admission are greatly appreciated and will go toward funding future Doghouse Ensemble Theatre incubator projects. DISASTER!
CHICAGO THEATRE WORKSHOP
4/13-5/6/2018
Earthquakes, tidal waves, towering infernos and the unforgettable songs of the ‘70’s take center stage in “DISASTER,” Broadway’s side splitting send-up of the 1970s disaster film genre. With a book by three-time Emmy Award nominee and SiriusXM On Broadway host, Seth Rudetsky, and Jack Plotnick – “DISASTER” features such hits as “Knock on Wood,” “I Will Survive,” “Sky High,” “Hooked on a Feeling,” and “Hot Stuff.”   It’s 1979, and New York’s hottest A-listers are lining up for the opening of a floating casino discotheque. Along for the adventure is a faded disco star, a sexy nightclub singer with her 11-year old twins, a disaster expert, a feminist reporter, an older couple with a big secret, an untrustworthy businessman, and a nun with a gambling addiction. What begins as a night of “boogie fever” quickly escalates to panic as the ship succumbs to a series of comical disasters. As night turns to day, everyone struggles to survive and, quite possibly, repair the love they’ve lost… or at least escape the piranhas and killer rats.

The musical by James Valcq and Fred Alley, which premiered off-Broadway in 2001 in a production by Playwrights Horizons, is set in a northern Wisconsin diner. THE SPITFIRE GRILL will be performed environmentally and acoustically in the Windy City Café, a breakfast restaurant at 1062 W. Chicago Avenue in the West Town neighborhood, just around the corner from Chicago Dramatists. Just 40 seats will be available for each performance. The story, based on the 1996 film of the same name that starred Ellen Burstyn and Marcia Gay Harden, concerns Percy, a feisty parolee recently released from prison who relocates to the fictional small town of Gilead, Wisconsin after seeing pictures of it in an old travel book. With the help of Gilead’s sheriff Joe, she gets a job at Hannah's Spitfire Grill. As she becomes involved with Hannah, Hannah’s family and others in the town, Percy soon learns that she is not the only person in Gilead who needs a second chance in life. The Spitfire Grill itself needs a second chance as well. It has been for sale for ten years, but there have been no takers for it - the only eatery in the depressed town. Percy suggests to Hannah that she raffle it off. Entry fees are one hundred dollars and the best essay on why you want the grill wins.
