BIO

Barbra Streisand began her professional career as a nightclub singer in 1960, performing at the Bon Soir nightclub in New York. She subsequently appeared at the Blue Angel nightclub from 1961 to 1962. Her first New York stage role was in Another Evening with Harry Stoones (1961). In 1962, she made her Broadway debut in I Can Get It for You Wholesale, earning a Tony Award nomination and contributing to the cast recording. During this period, she made early television appearances on The Tonight Show (1961), PM East/PM West (1961), The Garry Moore Show (1962), The Ed Sullivan Show (1962), and other variety programs.

Streisand signed with Columbia Records in 1963 and released The Barbra Streisand Album (1963), which won three Grammy Awards. She followed it with The Second Barbra Streisand Album (1963). In 1964, she returned to Broadway to star as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. From 1965 to 1968, she headlined four television specials, including the Emmy Award–winning My Name Is Barbra. She recorded numerous studio albums throughout the 1960s, including The Third Album (1964) and My Name Is Barbra (1965).

Her film debut came with Funny Girl (1968), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She followed with Hello, Dolly! (1972), Up the Sandbox (1972), The Way We Were (1973), For Pete’s Sake (1974), A Star Is Born (1976), and The Main Event (1979). She won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Evergreen” from A Star Is Born. Streisand co-founded First Artists Production Company in 1969 and established Barwood Films in 1972 to produce her projects.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Streisand released multiple commercially successful albums, including Stoney End (1971), Guilty (1980), and The Broadway Album (1985). She also released the live album One Voice (1986) and the box set Just for the Record (1991). She returned to Broadway material with Back to Broadway (1993), followed by Higher Ground (1997) and A Love Like Ours (1999).

Streisand expanded into directing and producing with Yentl (1983), which she produced, directed, co-wrote, and starred in. She repeated those roles for The Prince of Tides (1991) and The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996). Later acting roles included Meet the Fockers (2004), Little Fockers (2010), and The Guilt Trip (2012).

Her later music projects include Christmas Memories (2001), The Movie Album (2003), Guilty Pleasures (2005), Love Is the Answer (2009), Partners (2014), Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway (2016), and Walls (2018). She continued touring internationally with major concert tours in 1994, 1999–2000, 2006, 2007, and 2012–2013. In FORBIDDEN BROADWAY: GREATEST HITS, Georgia Ensemble Theatre delivers a brisk, audience-friendly sampler that playfully dismantles Broadway musical theatre culture, built from parodies of familiar titles and evergreen Broadway tropes.
