Grammy nominated singer-songwriter
Sara Bareilles' song "Brave" was inspired by watching a gay friend struggle with coming out, however since it was released it has become an all-purpose face-your-fears anthem, she tells CBS SUNDAY MORNING WITH

"I just felt like I was watching the song take flight and take on a life of its own," Bareilles tells Ben Tracy. "And it was becoming something bigger than it had even intended to be. And that's always, oh my gosh, what amazing hope for something you create."
The song has also created a bit of controversy. Three months after it was released,
Katy Perry released the song, "Roar," which immediately drew comparisons and fans accused Perry of stealing Bareilles' music.
"I mean I can't say that I think that they don't sound similar," Bareilles says. "I've known Katy a really long time and we're friends."
At the end of the day, Bareilles adds, the controversy has been "only really good for my song. So, thank you,
Katy Perry for that."
In a wide-ranging interview, Bareilles talks about the inspiration for her work, her career, and learning her new album, "The Blessed Unrest," had been nominated for a Grammy Award. She says the collection was a labor of love and pain, coming after the end of a long-term relationship with a boyfriend and breaking up with her band of 10 years.
"I didn't feel like I was on fire in any aspect of just who I am and who I wanna feel like in my soul," Bareilles tells Tracy.
