Placido Domingo Returns in LA Opera's THAIS, Starring Nino Machaidze - 5/17/2014

General Director Placido Domingo returns to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion stage in the final production of LA Opera's 2013/14 season, Jules Massenet's Thais,starring soprano Nino Machaidze in the title role. Mr. Domingo will perform the baritone role of Athanael, a monk whose determination to save the soul of a beautiful courtesan transforms into an unholy obsession. With these performances of Athanael, Mr. Domingo will have sung 25 leading roles at LA Opera.

Cleveland Orchestra's THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN - 5/17/2014

The Cleveland Orchestra takes you on a journey behind-the-scenes of their upcoming digitally-animated opera, The Cunning Little Vixen. This production is made specifically for Cleveland and will be unlike anything you've ever seen before. The video showcases The Cunning Little Vixen production team led by Director Yuval Sharon with animation by Bill Barminski & Christopher Louie. This is the first of a four part series that will lead up to the Cleveland Orchestra performances in May.

The Killer is newly translated by Michael Feingold and is directed by Darko Tresnjak (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder). Last produced Off-Broadway in 1960, The Killer is the final production of Theatre for a New Audience's inaugural season at Polonsky Shakespeare Center, 262 Ashland Place. Previews begin Saturday, May 17, at 7:30pm for an opening Thursday, May 29, and a scheduled run through Sunday, June 29. Presented with innovative and original animation, this world premiere production explores the depths of human experience in a charming tale of love, peril, freedom, and family. On the surface, the opera's story is about childish things, but underneath, human emotions boil over and burst apart between the 'animals of the forest' and their human interlocutors.

INK & STEEL Premieres at Soho Film Festival - 5/17/2014

After overcoming the impact of Hurricane Sandy and succeeding devastation, filmmakers Jonathan Ehlers and Patrick Ward-Perkins are premiering the mobster-themed drama "Ink & Steel" at the Soho International Film Festival at 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 17. This month, the first of two major house and role debuts takes Angela Meade - whose numerous honors include Richard Tucker and Beverly Sills Artist Awards - to Europe. For her first appearances at the Frankfurt Opera, the soprano sings her first Fidelia in concert performances of Puccini's Edgar (Feb 16 & 18), before making her Italian debut with her first Mathilde in a new Graham Vick production of Rossini's William Tell at the Teatro Regio di Torino (May 7-18) that will tour to Carnegie Hall next season. These European debuts follow on the heels of Meade's success in New York, where she recently headlined Bellini's Norma and showed off her comic chops in Verdi's Falstaff, both at the Metropolitan Opera, and the latter seen worldwide in the Met's Live in HD series. She also performed at a special Richard Tucker Centennial Gala, broadcast Live from Lincoln Center on PBS-TV.

Pacific Chorale Presents THE RADIO HOUR - 5/18/2014

The internationally-acclaimed Pacific Chorale in Orange County, CA will be presenting a new work created by American opera composer Jake Heggie, and the versatile librettist Gene Scheer entitled "THE RADIO HOUR". The choral opera will be conducted by Pacific Chorale's Artistic Director, John Alexander, and stage-directed by James R. Taulli. The premiere work will be performed by the organization's chamber choir, The John Alexander Singers, accompanied by an 8-member ensemble of musicians who are members of Pacific Symphony. The performance is on Sunday, May 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa, CA.

Journey into the heart and soul of one of the world's great works of art when Cooperstown hosts the regional premiere of Following the Ninth: In the Footsteps of Beethoven's Last Symphony (Kerry Candaele, director, 2013) on Sunday, May 18 at 6:30 pm. The film is an exploration of the worldwide cultural and political influence of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and the "Ode to Joy." Immediately following the film, there will be a live performance of "Ode to Joy" and a Q&A with Greg Mitchell, the film's co-producer.

Daly, Steggert & McNally Set for 2014 AIDS Walk New York - 5/18/2014

The Tony-nominated new Broadway play Mothers and Sons is proud to announce that the production has partnered with the 29th Annual AIDS Walk New York, the east coast's first and the world's largest AIDS fundraising event, on Sunday, May 18th. Four-time Tony Award winner Terrence McNally will be a speaker during the opening ceremony, and Tony Award nominee Bobby Steggert will sing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' from Rogers and Hammerstein's Carousel. There will also be a special appearance by Tony and 6-time Emmy Award-winner Tyne Daly.

Alex Jennings Replaces Douglas Hodge in 'CHOCOLATE FACTORY' - 5/19/2014

The West End is getting a new Willy Wonka. Taking over for Olivier and Tony Award-winning actor Douglas Hodge in Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will be fellow Olivier-winner Alex Jennings, according to the Daily Mail. Directed by Sam Mendes, the production opened at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 25 June 2013 and recently extended through May 20, 2015. Hodge's last performance is set for May 17, with Jennings taking over May 19, 2014.

59th Annual Village Voice Obie Awards to be Held 5/19 at Webster Hall - 5/19/2014

The Village Voice, the nation's first and largest alternative weekly newspaper, announced today that esteemed critic and longtime judge of the awards, Michael Feingold, will serve as Obie Chairman for the 59th Annual Village Voice OBIE Awards, to be presented Monday, May 19, at Webster Hall.

LuPone Set for THE CRADLE WILL ROCK Benefit Concert for Acting Company, 5/19 - 5/19/2014

Patti LuPone steps back into the role that led to her 1985 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical as Moll in The Cradle Will Rock on Monday, May 19, 7pm at Broadway's Bernard Jacobs Theatre, 242 West 45th Street. The concert staging of Marc Blitzstein's iconic work will benefit The Acting Company, co-founded by John Houseman, Cradle's original producer in 1937, who directed Ms. LuPone and a cast of Acting Company Alumni in a revival almost 50 years later. Lonny Price (Lincoln Center's Sweeney Todd and Company) will direct; Michael Barrett (Caramoor, NY Festival of Song) will again serve as musical director and play the score as he did in the 1980's production.
