BIO

Sutton Foster toured as Sandy Dumbrowski in Grease in 1995 and joined the Broadway production in 1996. In 1997, she appeared in the ensemble of The Scarlet Pimpernel on Broadway and later that year returned to Broadway as Star to Be in the revival of Annie. In 1998, she appeared in What the World Needs Now at the Old Globe Theatre and toured as Eponine in Les Misérables, understudying the role on Broadway in 2000. She joined the pre-Broadway run of Thoroughly Modern Millie at the La Jolla Playhouse and assumed the title role before its Broadway opening at the Marquis Theatre in 2002. She won the 2002 Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, the Drama Desk Award, and the Outer Critics Circle Award for her performance, and remained with the production until 2004.



In 2005, Foster starred as Jo March in the Broadway musical Little Women, earning a Tony Award nomination. In 2006, she appeared in The Drowsy Chaperone on Broadway, receiving a Tony nomination. From 2007 to 2008, she starred as Inga in Young Frankenstein. In 2008, she opened on Broadway as Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical, receiving a Tony nomination and winning an Outer Critics Circle Award; she remained with the production until it closed in 2010. In 2009, she released her debut solo album Wish. In 2010, she starred in the Encores! production of Anyone Can Whistle, made her Off-Broadway debut in Trust, guest-starred on Law & Order: SVU, and performed in concert tours.

In 2011, Foster starred as Reno Sweeney in the Broadway revival of Anything Goes, winning the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award. She departed in 2012 to star in the ABC Family series Bunheads (2012–2013), earning a Gracie Award and a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination. In 2014, she starred in the Roundabout Theatre Company revival of Violet on Broadway, receiving a Tony nomination, and appeared in the film The Angriest Man in Brooklyn.

In 2015, Foster began starring as Liza Miller in the TV Land series Younger, which premiered in 2015 and ran through 2021. That year, she also appeared in Encores!’ The Wild Party. In 2016, she starred in the Off-Broadway revival of Sweet Charity and appeared in the miniseries Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. In 2017, she performed with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and appeared in concert at Lincoln Center. From July to October 2021, she reprised Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes at London’s Barbican Theatre, earning a Laurence Olivier Award nomination.

In December 2021, Foster returned to Broadway as Marian Paroo in the revival of The Music Man, earning a Tony nomination; the production closed in January 2023. In February 2024, she starred as Mrs. Lovett in the Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. In 2024, she starred as Princess Winnifred in a concert production of Once Upon a Mattress with New York City Center Encores!, with the production transferring to Broadway and later to Los Angeles. She has also been announced to star in a stage musical adaptation of Coal Miner’s Daughter.
