After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree, Paul Mescal appeared on stage at the Gate Theatre in Dublin, starring as Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby and portraying the Prince in The Red Shoes (2017). In 2018, he appeared in the world premiere of Asking for It by Louise O’Neill, which later transferred to the Abbey Theatre, and made his London stage debut in The Plough and the Stars at Lyric Hammersmith. That year, he also appeared in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Kilkenny Arts Festival and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man at the Dublin Theatre Festival. In 2020, he performed in The Lieutenant of Inishmore at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin.
Mescal made his television debut starring as Connell Waldron in the miniseries Normal People (2020). His screen work that year also included the short film Drifting (2020), the Channel 5 miniseries The Deceived (2020), and an appearance in the Rolling Stones music video Scarlet (2020). He made his feature film debut in a supporting role in The Lost Daughter (2021). In 2022, he starred in God’s Creatures and Aftersun, and appeared in Carmen, which was released theatrically in 2023.
From 2022 to 2023, he portrayed Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire at the Almeida Theatre and in the West End. In 2023, Mescal starred in All of Us Strangers and Foe. In 2024, he starred in Gladiator II.
His upcoming projects include The History of Sound, Hamnet, Richard Linklater’s Merrily We Roll Along, and Sam Mendes’ four-part Beatles biopic series, scheduled to begin release in 2028. He is scheduled to return to the stage in 2027 in revivals of A Whistle in the Dark and Death of a Salesman.
