BIO
Krystal Joy Brown began her career on stage with the national tour of Rent (2007), where she played Mimi, before appearing in regional productions of Little Shop of Horrors (2008), High School Musical (2008), and Calvin Berger (2010), as well as the Off-Broadway show Falling for Eve (2010). She made her Broadway debut in the revival of Hair (2009). Brown went on to originate roles in Leap of Faith (2012), based on the film starring Steve Martin, and Big Fish (2013), later taking over the role of Diana Ross in Motown: The Musical in 2014.
Alongside her stage work, Brown appeared on television in Castle (2011), Deadbeat (2016), and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2016), and voiced Netossa in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018–2020). Her profile continued to rise with roles in Sydney to the Max (2019), The Equalizer (2021) opposite Queen Latifah, and Power Book III: Raising Kanan (2022). In 2019, she joined Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit Broadway musical Hamilton as Eliza Hamilton to critical praise.
Brown earned further acclaim for her portrayal of Gussie Carnegie in the revival of Merrily We Roll Along at New York Theatre Workshop, later reprising the role on Broadway in 2023 and receiving a Lucille Lortel Award nomination. She has cited inspirations including Eartha Kitt, Diahann Carroll, Dorothy Dandridge, and Diana Ross. She also voices Barbara Gordon in the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader.
