BIO

Soutra Gilmour is a British set and costume designer who has made a name for herself in the world of theater and opera. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Gilmour grew up with a love of the arts and went on to study at the Glasgow School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London.

Gilmour's career in theater began in the early 2000s, and she quickly made a name for herself with her innovative and visually stunning designs. She has worked on productions all over the world, from London's West End to Broadway and beyond.
One of Gilmour's most notable works is her set design for the 2012 West End production of "Inadmissible Evidence." The design featured a towering wall of file cabinets that served as a metaphor for the main character's cluttered mind. The design was widely praised by critics and helped to establish Gilmour as one of the most exciting new talents in the world of theater design.
Gilmour has also worked extensively in opera, designing sets and costumes for productions at some of the world's most prestigious opera houses. Her work on the 2016 production of "Tristan und Isolde" at the Metropolitan Opera in New York was particularly well-received, with critics praising her ability to create a sense of grandeur and majesty on stage.
In addition to her work in theater and opera, Gilmour has also designed sets and costumes for film and television. Her work on the 2014 film "The Riot Club" was particularly notable, with Gilmour creating a luxurious and opulent world for the film's wealthy protagonists.
Despite her success, Gilmour remains committed to pushing the boundaries of her craft and exploring new artistic avenues. In a 2019 interview with BroadwayWorld, she spoke about her desire to continue challenging herself and experimenting with new techniques and technologies.
Gilmour's most recent work includes the set and costume design for the 2020 West End production of "City of Angels," a musical comedy about a screenwriter struggling to adapt his novel into a screenplay. The production received widespread critical acclaim, with many praising Gilmour's ability to capture the glamour and intrigue of old Hollywood.
With her innovative designs and commitment to pushing the boundaries of her craft, Soutra Gilmour has established herself as one of the most exciting and visionary set and costume designers working today. Her work continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world, and she shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Review: WOMAN IN MIND, Starring Sheridan Smith
by Aliya Al-Hassan - Jan 7, 2026

Alan Ayckbourn’s 1985 play Woman In Mind is a darkly comic look about mental disintegration and a mid-life ennui that would have rarely been spoken about forty years ago. In the first major West End revival since 2012, director Michael Longhurst presents a startling portrait of a woman who retreats into a fantasy world as a means of coping with her lack of purpose and love in her real life.

Review: AND JULIET at Orpheum Theatre Memphis
by AniKatrina Fageol - Nov 26, 2025

'For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.' It's a classic tale, one that has been told hundreds of thousands of times and one that theatre kids everywhere know well. But you likely have not seen Romeo and Juliet quite like this. The costumes are vibrant, the choreography is exhilirating, the voices are powerful, and the story... there is quite the twist in the story.
