CHRISTINE JONES is a Tony-award winning set designer and the Artistic Director of the critically acclaimed Theatre for One, a portable private performing arts space for one actor and one audience member. Her Olivier and Tony Award winning scenography can currently be seen on Broadway and in the original London production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Along with co-designer Brett J. Banakis, Jones redesigned The Lyric Theatre in NYC, home to the first American production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Jones, along with co-designer Amy Rubin, most recently worked on Cyrano at The New Group, starring Peter Dinklage, with music by The National. Jones directed the sensational immersive nightclub dining experience, Queen of the Night, which New York Magazine has called the “Hottest Nightlife Experience in Town,” winning the 2015 Drama Desk Award for most Unique Theatrical Experience.
Her set design for American Idiot, A Punk Rock Musical directed by Michael Mayer, won a Tony Award for best set design in 2009. In 2012, Jones made her debut at The Metropolitan Opera with her design for Rigoletto, set in 1960’s Las Vegas, with La Traviata to follow, also with director Michael Mayer. Their production of Aida is set to open in September 2021. Additional Opera credits include The Elephant Man (Minnesota Opera); Lucia de Lammermoor (New York City Opera); and Giulio Cesare (Houston Grand Opera.)
Additional Broadway credits include: The Cher Show (co-designed with Brett J. Banakis); Hands on a Hardbody; On a Clear Day; Spring Awakening (Tony Nomination); The Green Bird, with director Julie Taymor (Drama Desk Nomination); and Everyday Rapture, starring Sherie-Renee Scott. Jones designed Close To You: Bacharach Reimagined, first at New York Theatre Workshop and then in London at the Menier Chocolate Factory before moving to the West End (co-designed with Brett J. Banakis); Coraline, adapted from Neil Gaman’s popular book with music by Stephen Merritt; The Book of Longing, based on the poems of Leonard Cohen, with music by Philip Glass (Lincoln Center Festival); The Onion Cellar, (Elliot Norton Award,) which she co-created with director Marcus Stern and The Dresden Dolls (and for which she transformed a black box theater into the 360-degree cabaret space it is today); Much Ado About Nothing (Shakespeare in the Park); Burn This, starring Ed Norton, Catherine Keener, Ty Burrell and Dallas Roberts (Signature Theatre); and True Love, for which she created The Zipper Space, infamous for its use of car seats in the audience.
Her designs were featured in the 2008 exhibition Curtain Call: Celebrating a Century of Women Designing for Live Performance at Lincoln Center Library for Performing Arts. In 2013, she served as Denzel Washington Guest Chairperson for Fordham University’s Theatre Department. She collaborated with The Windmill Factory as a Creative Direction Consultant for The Future of Storytelling (FoST) 2014 Conference. In 2015, Jones won an Obie for Sustained Excellence. In 2010, she was honored with an Award of Distinction from Montreal’s Concordia University. Jones has lectured at Princeton University and currently teaches at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Currently, Jones is designing Hopeland, in collaboration with Steven Hoggett with music by Jonsi, and Birthday Candles, a new play by Noah Haidle, for the Roundabout Theatre Company.
