Will Ferrell began his acting career with The Groundlings improvisational comedy troupe and joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1995, remaining on the show until 2002. During his tenure, he portrayed numerous recurring characters and impersonations and later returned to host the program multiple times. While on SNL, he also appeared in films including Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), A Night at the Roxbury (1998), Superstar (1999), Dick (1999), The Ladies Man (2000), Zoolander (2001), and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001).
After leaving Saturday Night Live, Ferrell starred in a series of feature films, beginning with Old School (2003) and Elf (2003). His film credits include Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004), Starsky & Hutch (2004), Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006), Stranger Than Fiction (2006), Step Brothers (2008), Land of the Lost (2009), The Other Guys (2010), Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013), The Campaign (2012), Get Hard (2015), Daddy’s Home (2015) and Daddy’s Home 2 (2017), and Zoolander 2 (2016).
Ferrell has also worked extensively as a voice actor, including roles in The Oblongs, Curious George (2006), Megamind (2010), The Lego Movie (2014), and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019). His television appearances include guest and recurring roles on Family Guy, 30 Rock, and King of the Hill.
In theater, Ferrell made his Broadway debut in 2009 with the one-man show You’re Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush. In recent years, his film work has included Downhill (2020), Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020), Spirited (2022), Barbie (2023), and Quiz Lady (2023).
In 2020 Ferrell starred alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the remake of the 2014 Swedish film Force Majeure, entitled Downhill which was directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. That same year he starred in the musical comedy film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga with Rachel McAdams. In 2022 he starred in the Apple TV+ musical comedy film Spirited with Ryan Reynolds. He also served as the film's producer. The next year he played the CEO of Mattel in Greta Gerwig's comedy film Barbie (2023) starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling; the same year he produced and starred in the film Quiz Lady. In 2024, Ferrell co-starred in a Netflix documentary Will & Harper.
