BIO
Linda Lavin began her stage career in the late 1950s, appearing in productions such as The Common Glory (1958) and performing with the Compass Players. In 1960 she appeared in George Gershwin’s Oh, Kay! at the East 74th Street Theater. She made early Broadway appearances in A Family Affair (1962), The Riot Act (1963), and Something Different (1967). Her Off-Broadway work included Wet Paint (1965), The Mad Show (1966), and Little Murders (1969). In 1966 she appeared in the Broadway musical It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane…It’s Superman. She received a Tony Award nomination for her role in Neil Simon’s Last of the Red Hot Lovers (1969) and appeared in Story Theatre (1971).
Lavin continued working in theater throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including The Comedy of Errors at Shakespeare in the Park (1975) and Six Characters in Search of an Author at the American Repertory Theatre (1984). She returned to Broadway in Broadway Bound (1987), winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. She later starred as Mama Rose in Gypsy (1990) and appeared in The Sisters Rosensweig (1993) and The Diary of Anne Frank (1997–1998), receiving a Tony Award nomination for the latter. Additional stage work included Death-Defying Acts (1995), The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife (2000–2001), and Hollywood Arms (2002). She later appeared in Collected Stories (2010), Other Desert Cities (2010–2011), the Kennedy Center production of Follies (2011), The Lyons (Off-Broadway 2011; Broadway 2012), Too Much Sun (2014), Our Mother’s Brief Affair (2015–2016), and New York City Opera’s production of Candide (2017).
On television, Lavin appeared in the television version of Damn Yankees (1967) and had guest roles on series including The Nurses, Rhoda, Harry O, and Kaz. She had a recurring role as Detective Janice Wentworth on Barney Miller (1975–1976) before starring as Alice Hyatt in the CBS sitcom Alice (1976–1985), for which she won two Golden Globe Awards and received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. She later starred in the sitcoms Room for Two (1992–1993) and Conrad Bloom (1998), and made guest appearances on series including The Muppet Show (1979), Touched by an Angel (1999), The Sopranos (2002), Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and The O.C.. Later television roles included Sean Saves the World (2013–2014), Bones (2015), 9JKL (2017–2018), Santa Clarita Diet (2019), and B Positive (2020–2022). In 2024 she appeared in the Hulu series Mid-Century Modern.
Lavin’s film work began with The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984). Additional film credits include See You in the Morning (1989), I Want to Go Home (1989), and The Back-up Plan (2010). She also appeared in numerous television films between 1967 and 1998 and directed the telefilm Flour Babies (1990). In addition to acting, she directed theater productions and taught acting and singing master classes.
