After graduating from Emerson College, Andrea Martin began her professional career in a touring production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. She relocated to Toronto in 1970 and worked in television, film and theater. In 1972, she appeared in a Toronto production of Godspell. Her early film roles included Cannibal Girls (1973) and Black Christmas (1974).
From 1976 to 1984, Martin was a cast member and writer on the Canadian television series SCTV, portraying multiple recurring characters. She received an Emmy nomination in 1981 and won Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program in 1982 and 1983. During the 1970s, she also performed with Toronto’s Second City.
She made her Broadway debut in My Favorite Year (1992), winning the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and Theatre World Award. Her subsequent Broadway credits include Candide (1997), Oklahoma! (2002), Young Frankenstein (2007), Exit the King (2009), Pippin (2013), Act One (2014), Noises Off (2015–2016) and McNeal (2024). She earned multiple Tony nominations and won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Pippin. She also appeared in regional theater productions including The Rose Tattoo and Betty’s Summer Vacation, and wrote and performed the solo show Nude, Nude, Totally Nude (1996).
Her television work includes Sesame Street (from 1989), Kate & Allie (1980s), Roxie (1990), Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1990s), Life… and Stuff (1997), Nurse Jackie (2009), 30 Rock (2012), Difficult People (2015–2017), Hairspray Live! (2016) and Working the Engels (2014).
Martin’s film credits include Club Paradise (1986), All I Want for Christmas (1991), Wag the Dog (1997), Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001), The Producers (2005), My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002), All Over the Guy (2001), Breaking Upwards (2009), Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014), My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016) and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (2023). She also appeared in the 2006 remake of Black Christmas.
She has performed extensive voice work in animation, including Anastasia (1997), Rugrats, The Simpsons, Recess, Kim Possible, SpongeBob SquarePants, American Dad! (2012) and Brother Bear 2 (2006). In 2018, she was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame.
She most recently appeared in Meet the Cartozians Off-Broadway, and will appear in High Spirits at Encores! in 2026.
