3 Broadway Shows Close Today
Chess, The Balusters, and Celebrity Autobiography play their final performances on June 21, 2026.
Today, June 21, 2026, Broadway says goodbye to three productions. Chess takes its final bow at the Imperial Theatre following 34 previews and 249 regular performances; The Balusters concludes its limited run at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre after 22 previews and 72 regular performances; and Celebrity Autobiography concludes its run at the Shubert Theatre after 3 previews and 40 regular performances. The theatres will soon be home to 860, School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play, and Galileo respectively.

The Balusters was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Play, Best Featured Actress in a Play (Marylouise Burke), Best Featured Actor in a Play (Richard Thomas), Best Direction of a Play, and Best Costume Design of a Play (Emilio Sosa). The production has also been nominated for two Drama League Awards–Outstanding Production of a Play and the Distinguished Performance Award (Marylouise Burke)–and eight Drama Desk Award nominations including Outstanding Play, Outstanding Direction of a Play (Kenny Leon), Outstanding Lead Performance in a Play (Anika Noni Rose), Outstanding Featured Performance in a Play (Maria-Christina Oliveras, Richard Thomas), Outstanding Scenic Design of a Play (Derek McLane), Outstanding Costume Design of a Play (Emilio Sosa), and Outstanding Fight Choreography (Thomas Schall).
The Balusters is a raucous, wild ride through a small community with big feelings. The Vernon Point Neighborhood Association is a passionate bunch, whether squabbling over historically inaccurate porch railings or debating trash can protocol. Still, no one is prepared for the neighbor-versus-neighbor battle royale that ensues when a newcomer to the board suggests the unthinkable: installing a stop sign on the corner of the enclave’s prettiest block.

CHESS was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical (Nicholas Christopher), Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical (Bryce Pinkham), Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical (Hannah Cruz), Best Orchestrations (Brian Usifer) and Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Kevin Adams). The new production was nominated for the Drama Desk, Drama League and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding Revival of a Musical and received three Chita Rivera Award nominations including Outstanding Choreography in a Broadway Show for Lorin Latarro and Outstanding Ensemble in a Broadway show.
Featuring a new book by Emmy Award winner Danny Strong, with music and lyrics by Emmy and Tony Award nominees ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award winner Tim Rice, based on an idea by Tim Rice, this new production is directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer and choreographed by Drama Desk Award nominee Lorin Latarro with original orchestrations by Anders Eljas, orchestrations by Anders Eljas and 2026 Tony Award nominee Brian Usifer and music supervision by Brian Usifer.
Celebrity Autobiography is the international hit comedy sensation featuring a constantly-expanding rotating cast of today's celebrities from TV, film and stage, sports, and, yes, even politics, acting out OTHER celebrities’ unintentionally hilarious autobiographies live on Broadway.
