Farrell began his career with roles in television series such as Ballykissangel and Falling for a Dancer in 1998 and 1999, before making his feature film debut in Tim Roth’s directorial debut The War Zone, followed by Ordinary Decent Criminal. In 2000, he gained attention in Joel Schumacher’s Tigerland, and went on to star in a string of American thrillers including Phone Booth, The Recruit, and S.W.A.T. He also took on supporting roles in Minority Report and as Bullseye in Daredevil. Farrell continued to build his career with independent films like Intermission, A Home at the End of the World, and Alexander, and historical epics such as The New World. He appeared in commercially successful projects including Miami Vice, Cassandra’s Dream, and Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges, which earned him a Golden Globe Award.
Farrell’s versatility was evident in films such as Pride and Glory, Ondine, and London Boulevard, as well as genre films including Horrible Bosses, the Fright Night remake, and the 2012 Total Recall remake. He collaborated again with McDonagh on Seven Psychopaths and appeared in thrillers such as Dead Man Down and fantasy adaptations like Winter’s Tale. Farrell continued to take on complex roles in Saving Mr. Banks, Miss Julie, the second season of True Detective, and Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster, earning critical praise and awards recognition.
In recent years, Farrell starred in the Fantastic Beasts series, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin (winning a Volpi Cup and Golden Globe, and receiving an Academy Award nomination), and Tim Burton’s Dumbo. In 2022, he portrayed Oswald "Oz" Cobb / Penguin in The Batman, reprising the role in the HBO series The Penguin (2024) and set to return in The Batman Part II (2027). That same year, he reunited with McDonagh and Gleeson in The Banshees of Inisherin, and his upcoming projects include Kogonada’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey (2024), a film based on Sgt. Rock (2025), and Ballad of a Small Player (2025) alongside Tilda Swinton.
