This past season was the year of the comedy in St. Louis Theater. Companies across the city had audiences laughing all season long with slapstick, farce, and satire. There were some wonderful musical productions that really sang, a few hard hitting dramas, but comedies reigned in both quantity and quality. Instead of publishing a Top 10 list this year, I’m going to recognize the Best in St. Louis Theater for 2025. “The Best” is still a shortened list of just 13 shows out of the nearly 90 shows I saw this past year. It took weeks of thought and painstaking consideration to decide which productions would be included in my annual list. Here they are. The productions are listed in alphabetical order, not ranked by favorites:

The newly opened Teatro YouTube launches its inaugural season on December 18 with Hip Hop Hamlet, a bold contemporary musical that fuses Shakespeare’s classic tragedy with the aesthetics and rhythms of hip-hop culture. The production blends live performance, immersive lighting, videocenography and a soundtrack featuring Aretha Franklin, Racionais MC’s, Kanye West, Jorge Ben Jor, Toni Tornado and Tim Maia.

​A highlight of the spring 2025 season, the creation of Guillaume Côté and Robert Lepage, Hamlet, will return to the stage. The creators took on the challenge of approaching this mythical work solely through dance.

Broadway’s master songman, Mandy Patinkin, accompanied by Adam Ben-David on piano, will bring his newest theatre concert Mandy Patinkin in Concert: BEING ALIVE, to the Carpenter Center.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater will present One Knight Only! Sir Ian McKellen Onstage with Gandalf, Shakespeare, and You! on January 30, 2026. Proceeds will support the theater’s education and youth programs.

Experience Theatre Project will present a new adaptation of MACBETH directed by Alisa Stewart. The production will incorporate movement-driven storytelling and a soundscape inspired by the music of Radiohead.
