Watching the groundlings interact with the cast on Saturday night was heartening. Young people fully engaged and wanting more - eager to participate in all the goings-on. Yes! Frivolity, flippancy and folly hit the mark with the full audience despite Auckland turning on it's coldest and windiest weather that could have easily distracted and derailed. But the weather was no competitor for the waves made from leaf blowers, the stylised french sailors, the stunning costumes (Valentine's was my new all time favourite ever) and the general tomfoolery highlighted within this great yarn of disguise and dissipation (whether calculated or heart-felt)

Samuel West directs original cast members Sam Alexander (Robert Watson), Sally Bankes (Nanny), Joe Bannister (Lord Osborne), Jane Booker (Lady Osborne), Elaine Claxton (Mrs Edwards), Tim Delap (Mr Howard), Sophie Duval (Mrs Robert), Louise Ford (Laura), John Wilson Goddard (Mr Watson), Grace Molony (Emma Watson), Elander Moore (Bertie), Paksie Vernon (Elizabeth Watson), Cat White (Miss Osborne) and Laurence Ubong Williams (Tom Musgrave), who are joined by Rhianna McGreevy (Margaret Watson), with Isaac Forward, Sonny Fowler and Teddy Probets sharing the role of Charles Howard for the run at the Menier. The Watsons played to critical acclaim at Chichester Festival Theatre in 2018. The production opens at the Menier on 30 September, with previews from 20 September, and runs until 16 November.

The world-renowned South African theater artists Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer have been bringing vibrant works to the Provincetown Theater stage (238 Bradford Street, Provincetown, MA.), in conjunction with the annual Tennessee Williams Theater Festival, since 2013. On August 30, TheatreSquared (T2) will stage a special workshop production of 10,000 Balconies as the first offering in the Spring Theatre at T2's new home in downtown Fayetteville. This new play, conceived, created and directed by Kholoud Sawaf (director of T2's Vietgone), loosely inspired by Romeo and Juliet, is set in modern Syria. 10,000 Balconies is an intimate window into the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world, suffused with its poetry, music, dance, and movement, and centered on a story of love in contemporary Damascus. With original music performed live by Hadi Eldebek (Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road project ensemble) and members of the cast, 10,000 Balconies is an immersive performance experience, offered in Northwest Arkansas from August 30 until September 1. The play's three-year developmenta?"which included a series of artist-driven workshops and retreats in Northwest Arkansas and New Yorka?"and public performances were made possible by a major grant from the Building Bridges Program of the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art.

It took ASC, with hundreds of actors, 26 years to complete Shakespeare's works the first time (this last time through, it only took us 8!) These three nerds will do 'em all in an evening. Show offs.
