Pittsburgh's tenor sax great Stanley Turrentine and trumpet king Sean Jones have set a high bar for fellow practitioners at the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival Presented by Citizens (PIJF) to follow. Trumpeters Nicholas Payton and Keyon Harrold and tenor saxophonist and Pittsburgher Chelsea Baratz, have met that bar with their inventive and individual artistic expressions.

Celebrities lending their support for this year’s fundraising special included Elizabeth Banks, Jessica Biel, Don Cheadle, Katie Couric, Danai Gurira, Tony Hale, Ken Jeong, Queen Latifah, Maria Menounos, Julianne Moore, Tig Notaro, Jimmy Smits, Eric Stonestreet and Justin Timberlake. In the U.S., SU2C is still gratefully accepting donations.

The Academy Museum Gala will celebrate the acclaimed museum’s two-year anniversary and will honor three-time Academy Award-winner Meryl Streep, award-winning Michael B. Jordan, Academy Award-nominated Oprah Winfrey, and Academy Award-winning filmmaker and actor Sofia Coppola.

The President and First Lady have a long relationship with SU2C. During SU2C’s 2016 fundraising telecast, President Biden—then Vice President—spoke on behalf of his son Joseph “Beau” Biden III, who passed away from brain cancer in 2015. First lady Jill Biden joined Stand Up To Cancer during game 4 of Major League Baseball’s 2022 World Series.

The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre (The Gamm) launches its 2023-24 season with Topdog/Underdog, Suzan-Lori Parks’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play about brotherly love, sibling rivalry, and surviving the American Dream. The Gamm’s Season 39 opener runs from September 7-October 1.

Marvel Studios’ “Secret Invasion” stars Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Martin Freeman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Charlayne Woodard, Killian Scott, Samuel Adewunmi, Dermot Mulroney, Christopher McDonald, Katie Finneran, with Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman, and Don Cheadle. Veteran actor of stage and screen Lew Palter has passed away from lung cancer at sage 94. 

Mark Amin’s Sobini Films has set Lauren Staerck and Natasha Henstridge to star in the horror/fairytale CINDERELLA’S REVENGE directed by Andy Edwards (Zombie Spring Breakers). The film is produced by Mark Amin of Sobini Films, Mark Lester, Cami Winikoff, and Jessica Mathis, with Stephanie Lodge, Beatrice Fletcher, Megan Purvis and Darrell Griggs.

Hennepin Theatre Trust has announced that American actor, comedian, writer, director and producer Ben Schwartz will appear for one night only in Minneapolis at the historic State Theatre.

Comedy Works Entertainment presents the long-form improv of BEN SCHWARTZ & FRIENDS at Paramount Theatre in Denver, CO on Saturday, June 17th at 7:00pm.

Danny Elfman’s official soundtrack for the forthcoming film White Noise has been released. Featuring 21 tracks, Elfman’s score serves as an ambitious and eccentric musical compliment to Academy Award-nominated writer-director Noah Baumbach’s latest project. Boasting an all-star ensemble headlined by Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig and Don Cheadle.

To open the festival, Daniel Craig returns in GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MURDER MYSTERY, from the surprise 2019 hit Knives Out, reprising his role as detective Benoit Blanc, heading off to Greece with a new case to crack and a fresh ensemble of suspects to rattle (Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson).

Among the members who signed the statement of support for the CROWN Act are Audra McDonald, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Kerry Washington, and dozens of other performers. In the letter, members assert, “Discrimination based on hair style or texture is a destructive practice that has alienated and caused irreparable harm to Black Americans.”
