BIO
Mary Beth Daly made her Broadway debut in 1967 in the short-lived play That Summer, That Fall. She went on to appear in films including John and Mary (1969), Angel Unchained (1970), Play It as It Lays (1972), and The Adulteress. In 1976, she portrayed Kate Moore in the film The Enforcer, part of the Dirty Harry franchise.
Daly’s major breakthrough came with the CBS drama Cagney & Lacey, where she played Mary Beth Lacey from 1982 to 1988. She won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series four times (1983, 1984, 1985, and 1988) for the role. During this period, she also appeared on the variety program Dolly (1988), which led to her casting as Rose in the Broadway revival of Gypsy (1989–1991), a role for which she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1990.
In the 1990s, Daly continued work in television and theatre, including guest appearances on Wings (1991) and performances in stage productions such as The Seagull (1992), Call Me Madam (1995), and Come Back, Little Sheba (1997). She later starred as Maxine Gray on the CBS drama Judging Amy from 1999 to 2005.
From 2006 onward, Daly returned to Broadway in Rabbit Hole (2006), earning a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play. She starred in the premiere of Edward Albee’s Me, Myself & I (2008), appeared in Love, Loss, and What I Wore (2009), and performed a cabaret show Second Time Around (2009–2010). She also played Maria Callas in Master Class on Broadway (2011) and in London’s West End production in 2012.
In film and television during this period, Daly appeared in Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015), Basmati Blues (2017), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018). She also appeared in A Bread Factory Part 1 & 2 (2018) and had recurring and guest roles on series including Burn Notice, Grey’s Anatomy, Madam Secretary, and Mom.
She was set to lead Roundabout Theatre Company's 2024 revival of Doubt, but had to withdraw from the production due to a medial issue. She was replace by Amy Ryan.
