After earning a B.A. in Theater Studies from Yale University, Westfeldt began her career as a New York–based stage actress, appearing in regional and Off-Broadway productions, including The Fantasticks. In 1997, she became a series regular on the sitcom Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place (1997–1999) and co-wrote and co-starred in the Off-Broadway play Lipschtick: The Story of Two Women Seeking the Perfect Shade (1997). She later co-wrote and starred in the independent film adaptation Kissing Jessica Stein, which premiered in 2001 and was released theatrically in 2002.
Westfeldt made her Broadway debut in Wonderful Town (2003–2004). She wrote and starred in Ira & Abby, which premiered in 2006 and was released in 2007. Her television work during this period included Holding the Baby (2002), Notes from the Underbelly (2007–2009), and appearances in multiple pilots and series projects. In 2011, she wrote, directed, produced, and starred in Friends with Kids, which was released in 2012.
From 2012 onward, Westfeldt appeared in television series including Younger, Queen America (2018), Grey’s Anatomy, 24, Judging Amy, Hack, Girls, This Is Us, and Childrens Hospital, and voiced Kit Luntayne on Martha Speaks. Her stage work during this period included productions such as The Library, The Explorers Club, Too Much Sun, A Lifetime Burning, Finks, The Power of Duff, Big Sky, and The Gett (2022). Her film work included Lemon (2016) and a role in Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2017). She produced the documentary Circus Kid (2017), wrote episodes of The First Lady (2022), and adapted the screenplay for The Idea of You, which was released in 2024. She is also developing a film adaptation of The Sweet Spot.
