Dan Stevens began his professional acting career in 2004, when he was cast as Orlando in a touring production of As You Like It. In 2006, he starred as Nick Guest in the BBC adaptation of The Line of Beauty, appeared in Hay Fever at the Haymarket Theatre, and acted in BBC productions Dracula and Maxwell. In 2008, he appeared in Sense & Sensibility and in the West End revival of The Vortex. His subsequent television work included Marple: Nemesis (2009) and The Turn of the Screw (2009), and he returned to the West End in Arcadia (2009).
From 2010 to 2012, Stevens starred as Matthew Crawley in the ITV series Downton Abbey. In 2012, he appeared in the films Vamps and Summer in February, and made his Broadway debut in The Heiress. His film credits in 2014 included The Guest, The Cobbler, A Walk Among the Tombstones, and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.
In 2016, Stevens was cast as David Haller in the FX series Legion, which aired from 2017 to 2019, and appeared in Colossal (2016). In 2017, he starred as the Beast in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, and appeared in Marshall and The Man Who Invented Christmas. His later film work includes Apostle (2018), Lucy in the Sky (2019), The Call of the Wild (2020), Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020), and I’m Your Man (2021). He returned to Broadway in Hangmen (2020).
Stevens voiced roles in The Sea Beast (2022) and appeared in Cuckoo (2024), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), and Abigail (2024). In 2025, he starred in Swiped, The Ritual, AMC’s The Terror season three, and the Netflix series Zero Day. He is set to reprise his role in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova (2027), and was cast in Hey Bear (2025) and Babies (2025).
In addition to screen and stage work, Stevens has narrated more than 30 audiobooks, including Casino Royale, Wolf Hall, and War Horse.
