Bobby Cannavale began his acting career in theater before appearing in the films Night Falls on Manhattan (1997) and The Bone Collector (1999). He gained recognition as Bobby Caffey on Third Watch and starred in the television series 100 Centre Street in 2001. His television credits also include Ally McBeal and Kingpin (2002), Oz (2003), Will & Grace (2004–2006), and guest appearances on Sex and the City, Six Feet Under, Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Cannavale's film credits include The Guru (2002), The Station Agent (2003), Shall We Dance? (2004), Romance & Cigarettes and Snakes on a Plane (2005), and The Take (2007). He also appeared in the Ken Burns documentary series The War (2007), providing the voice of Corado R. Ciarlo. In 2009, he starred in the television series Cupid and appeared in Cold Case.
On Broadway, Cannavale received a Tony Award nomination for his performance as Dennis in Mauritius (2008). He later starred in The MotherF*CKer with the Hat (2011), earning another Tony Award nomination. His subsequent film credits include The Other Guys (2010), Win Win (2011), and Danny Collins (2015).
From 2012 to 2013, Cannavale appeared in Nurse Jackie and played Gyp Rosetti in the third season of Boardwalk Empire, winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He also appeared on Modern Family in 2012. His later television credits include the Hulu miniseries Nine Perfect Strangers (2021) and the Netflix series The Watcher (2022).
Cannavale appeared in the play Medea in 2020 alongside Rose Byrne. Since 2015, he has also performed in short plays produced for radio and podcasts by Playing On Air, including Crazy Eights, Mere Mortals, and 2 Dads.
