Carol Burnett began her television career with a minor role on The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show (1955). She starred opposite Buddy Hackett in the sitcom Stanley (1956–1957) and appeared on The Tonight Show and The Ed Sullivan Show (1957). She was a regular on the game show Pantomime Quiz (late 1950s).
She appeared on Broadway in Once Upon a Mattress (1959) and became a regular cast member on The Garry Moore Show (1959–1962). She co-starred in the television special Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall (1962) and guest-starred on The Twilight Zone (1962). She starred as Calamity Jane in Calamity Jane (1963) and made her feature film debut in Who’s Been Sleeping in My Bed? (1963). She appeared in The Entertainers (1964), Fade Out – Fade In (1964), Get Smart (1966), the special Carol + 2 (1966), and The Lucy Show (1966–1967).
Burnett hosted and starred in The Carol Burnett Show (1967–1978). During this period she appeared on Sesame Street (1969), starred in the films Pete ’n’ Tillie (1972) and The Front Page (1974), appeared in the television drama 6 Rms Riv Vu (1974), and performed on stage in I Do! I Do! (1974). She continued the format with Carol Burnett & Company (1979), and the series later aired in syndication as Carol Burnett and Friends.
Her later film work included A Wedding (1978), The Four Seasons (1981), Annie (1982), and Noises Off (1992). She appeared in the concert staging of Follies (1985). She returned to Broadway in Moon Over Buffalo (1995) and Putting It Together (1999).
On television, she appeared in Fresno (1986), Carol, Carl, Whoopi and Robin (1987), Plaza Suite (1987), Julie & Carol: Together Again (1989), Carol & Company (1990–1991), The Larry Sanders Show (1992), and Mad About You (1990s). She played Verla Grubbs on All My Children (from 1983; recurring through 2011) and appeared in the TV film Seasons of the Heart (1994).
She provided voice roles in The Trumpet of the Swan (2001), Horton Hears a Who! (2008), The Secret World of Arrietty (2012, U.S. dub), and Toy Story 4 (2019). She returned to film in Once Upon a Mattress (2005) and guest-starred on Desperate Housewives (2000s), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2009), and Glee (2010). She appeared on Broadway in Love Letters (2014) and had a recurring role on Hawaii Five-0 (2013–2016).
She guest-starred in Better Call Saul (2022), appeared in the special The Carol Burnett Show: 50th Anniversary Special (2017) and the NBC tribute Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love (2023), co-starred in the series Palm Royale (2024), and appeared as herself in Hacks (2025).
