BIO
Christopher Plummer made his professional acting debut with Ottawa’s Stage Society in The Rivals (1948). He worked with the Montreal Repertory Theatre in the early 1950s and made his Broadway debut in The Starcross Story (1953), followed by Home Is the Hero (1954), The Dark Is Light Enough (1955), and The Lark (1955). His early stage work also included Medea (1955), Julius Caesar (1955), The Tempest (1955), and extensive performances at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival beginning in 1956, including Henry V (1956), Hamlet (1957), Twelfth Night (1957), Much Ado About Nothing (1958), and J.B. (1959), for which he received his first Tony Award nomination.
Plummer appeared frequently on television in the 1950s and early 1960s, including Othello (1953), Studio One (1953), Appointment with Adventure (1956), The Philadelphia Story (1959), A Doll’s House (1959), Cyrano de Bergerac (1962), and Hamlet at Elsinore (1964). He made his film debut in Stage Struck (1958) and appeared in Wind Across the Everglades (1958), The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964), and Inside Daisy Clover (1965).
He achieved international recognition starring as Captain Georg von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1965). His subsequent film work included Triple Cross (1966), The Night of the Generals (1967), Oedipus the King (1968), Battle of Britain (1969), Waterloo (1970), The Pyx (1973), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), The Return of the Pink Panther (1975), Aces High (1976), The Silent Partner (1978), International Velvet (1978), and Murder by Decree (1979).
On stage, he won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for Cyrano (1973) and appeared in The Good Doctor (1973), After the Fall (1974), and Barrymore (1997), winning a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for the latter. His other notable stage roles included Othello (1982), Macbeth (1988), King Lear (2002, 2004), Inherit the Wind (2007), Caesar and Cleopatra (2008–2009), The Tempest (2009–2010), and A Word or Two (2012, 2014).
Plummer’s later film credits include Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), Malcolm X (1992), Wolf (1994), Dolores Claiborne (1995), 12 Monkeys (1995), The Insider (1999), A Beautiful Mind (2001), National Treasure (2004), Syriana (2005), The New World (2005), The Lake House (2006), Up (2009), The Last Station (2009), Beginners (2011), The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), Remember (2015), The Man Who Invented Christmas (2017), All the Money in the World (2017), and Knives Out (2019).
His television work from 1977 onward included Jesus of Nazareth (1977), The Thorn Birds (1983), Counterstrike (1990–1993), Madeline (1993–1995), Nuremberg (2000), Our Fathers (2005), and Departure (2019–2021). He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Beginners (2011) and received additional Academy Award nominations for The Last Station (2009) and All the Money in the World (2017).
Plummer also performed voice work in An American Tail (1986), Rock-a-Doodle (1991), Up (2009), 9 (2009), and the video game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011). He remained active in film, television, and theater until shortly before his death in 2021.
