Judy McLane is currently starring in Putting It Together at Pioneer Playhouse. Broadway credits include starring in Mamma Mia! as Donna and Tanya (over 4000 performances), Kiss of the Spider Woman with Chita Rivera, Aspects of Love, Chess. Off-Broadway: Romeo and Bernadette (Outer Critics Circle Award), Johnny Guitar (Drama Desk Nomination and Drama League Honor). Tours: Into the Woods, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with Donny Osmond, Big, Side By Side By Sondheim (dir. Rob Marshall). I’m about to commit a musical theater geek sin, Dear Readers, so get the torches and pitchforks ready. I don’t care for Stephen Sondheim’s show, “Company”. I appreciate it for what it is, but I think it rambles, and ultimately says not very much at all. Then along comes the revival of the show with a gender swap element, currently playing at the Paramount. And this new take did not help my appreciation, in fact it exasperates all the things I find problematic with the show and adds in a slew of new issues.

Once you see enough of his shows, however, you start to notice the diversity in the stories. West Side Story, A Funny Thing Happens on the Way to the Forum, and Sweeney Todd, just to name a few, are all vastly different tales. Add to the list another Sondheim classic, but told in a whole new way, and you have the revival of Company currently on its national tour and the latest show to make a stop at the Buell Theatre.
