Andre Braugher made his feature film debut in Glory (1989). He appeared in the ABC television film revival of Kojak in the late 1980s before starring as Detective Frank Pembleton on Homicide: Life on the Street from 1993 to 1999, returning for the 2000 reunion television film. His film credits include City of Angels (1998), Frequency (2000) and Poseidon (2006).
He starred as Ben Gideon on the television series Gideon’s Crossing (2000–2001) and narrated the PBS documentaries Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet (2002) and The Murder of Emmett Till (2003). He played Detective Marcellus Washington on Hack from 2002 to 2004. In 2006, he starred in the FX miniseries Thief. His later film work included Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), The Mist (2007), Passengers (2008) and Salt (2010), and he voiced Darkseid in Superman/Batman: Apocalypse (2010).
Braugher appeared on television series including House, M.D. (2007–2008), Men of a Certain Age (2009–2011), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2011–2015) and starred in the ABC series Last Resort (2012–2013). From 2013 to 2021, he starred as Capt. Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He also had a recurring voice role on BoJack Horseman (2017).
His stage work includes playing the title role in Henry V in 1996 and appearing in The Whipping Man off-Broadway in 2011. Braugher narrated NBC’s Olympic Games coverage from 2006 to 2010 and narrated the audiobook Cross Fire (2010). His final role was as Chief Usher A.B. Wynter in Netflix’s The Residence, which was completed after his death.
Braugher died on December 11, 2023, at the age of 61.
