Your heart rate will climb as you do, and the descent will be a chance for your heart rate to settle as your body recovers. For a more intense kick in the cardio butt, you can take the stairs two at a time, which makes the muscles of your legs and hips work harder. To up the ante even more, running up the stairs - probably two at a time - will require the most strength and elevate your heart rate the quickest.
