Douglas Maxwell Wins 2024 ‘Hector’ Award for Best New Scottish Play

The Scottish Society of Playwrights (SSP) has announced that the 2024 Hector MacMillan Award for Best New Scottish Play—affectionately known as “The Hector”—has been awarded to Douglas Maxwell for his acclaimed play So Young. This marks Maxwell’s second consecutive win, following last year’s recognition for The Sheriff of Kalamaki, making him the first playwright to win the Hector two years in a row.

In this reimagined production, Tommy and Jeff, two World War II fighter pilots, crash land in the Highlands of Scotland and discover the magical land of Brigadoon, where not everything is what it seems. Recently, we had the chance to chat with Jasmine Jules Andrews, who plays Jean McLaren in Brigadoon. We discussed what it’s been like to connect with her Scottish culture, the surprising audition process and the beauty of the show and this particular production.
