Bertie Carvel's stage credits include Revelations at Hampstead Theatre, Rose Bernd at Arcola Theatre, Coram Boy (2005–2007), The Life of Galileo, The Man of Mode, and Damned By Despair at the National Theatre, Parade at the Donmar Warehouse (2008), and Matilda the Musical at the Cambridge Theatre. He won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as Miss Trunchbull in Matilda (2012) after previously receiving a nomination for Parade (2008).
From 2011 to 2024, Carvel voiced the male Imperial Agent in the video game Star Wars: The Old Republic. In 2013, he reprised his Olivier Award-winning performance as Miss Trunchbull in Matilda on Broadway, earning a Drama Desk Award and a Tony Award nomination. His later stage work included Bakkhai at the Almeida Theatre (2015), The Hairy Ape at The Old Vic (2015), and Ink at the Almeida Theatre (2017), the West End, and Broadway (2019). His performance in Ink earned him the 2019 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. In 2016, he made his directorial debut with Strife at Chichester Festival Theatre's Minerva Theatre.
Carvel's screen credits include Doctor Who, Sherlock, The Wrong Mans, Babylon, Hawking, The Crimson Petal and the White, Money, Midsomer Murders, John Adams, Agatha Christie: A Life in Pictures, and the film Les Misérables (2012). He starred as Jonathan Strange in the BBC adaptation of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (2015), portrayed Nick Clegg in Coalition (2015), and appeared in the BBC drama Doctor Foster (2015–2017).
Since 2021, Carvel has starred as Adam Dalgliesh in the television series Dalgliesh. He portrayed former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in seasons five and six of The Crown (2022–2023) and played Donald Trump in Mike Bartlett's play The 47th at The Old Vic (2022). In 2025, he was announced as the narrator of the revival series Walking With Dinosaurs and was cast as Cornelius Fudge in the forthcoming Harry Potter television series. In 2026, he portrays Baelor Targaryen in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
