The theatrical ties to the Wizarding World continue to be strong, as HBO has employed the talent of several award-winning stage actors for their forthcoming Harry Potter television series.
With the show now in production in the UK, we have put together a guide to the stage performers assembled for this new series, which ranges from two-time Tony winner John Lithgow to Arabella Stanton, who played the role of Matilda in the West End production of the musical.
The series, a faithful adaptation of the seven-volume book series, will debut in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max, where it’s available. Take a look below at the theater actors cast in the series to find out how you know them from the stage!

John Lithgow's notable Broadway roles include The Changing Room (1973, Tony Award), M. Butterfly (1988), Sweet Smell of Success (2002, Tony Award), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (2005, Tony nomination), and The Columnist (2012). He also starred in King Lear (2014) at Shakespeare in the Park and Hillary and Clinton (2019). He is currently starring in the West End production of Giant, about the children's author Roald Dahl.
Janet McTeer is also a Tony and Olivier Award-winning actress. Her Broadway credits include A Doll's House (1997, Tony Award), God of Carnage (2009), Mary Stuart (2009), Les Liaisons Dangereuses (2016), and Bernhardt / Hamlet (2018). More recently, she appeared in Phaedra at London's National Theatre.
Paapa Essiedu has starred in numerous productions in London, including King Lear at The National Theatre and West End productions, Racing Demon, Pass Over, A Number, and The Effect, which later transferred to New York City's The Shed.
Luke Thallon is a stage performer appearing in Pinter at the Pinter, Present Laughter at the Old Vic, the West End premiere of Leopoldstadt, and the West End and Broadway production of Patriots.
Carvel is a two-time Olivier Award winner for his performances as Miss Trunchbull in Matilda the Musical and Rupert Murdoch in James Graham's Ink, respectively. He also won a Tony Award for the Broadway transfer of Ink. Other stage credits include Coram Boy at The National Theatre, Parade at The Donmar Warehouse, and The 47th and Pygmalion at the Old Vic.
Arabella Stanton previously played the title role in Matilda: The Musical on London’s West End from 2023 to 2024.
Powley was seen on Broadway in the productions of Arcadia and Lobby Hero. In 2024, she starred in The Real Thing at The Old Vic.
Rigby has appeared in several productions in the UK, including One Man, Two Guvnors (also Broadway), Breaking the Code, Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Accidental Death of an Anarchist. He most recently played the role of Mr Stringer in the Royal National Theatre production of Dave Malloy's musical adaptation of The Witches.
Parkinson received an Olivier Award nomination for her performance in London's Home, I'm Darling. Other stage credits include The Lightning Play, The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, and Much Ado About Nothing.
Flynn played Richard Burton in the London production of Jack Thorne's play The Motive and the Cue in 2023 and has appeared in several other stage productions in the UK, along with his screen roles.
Brealey has appeared in numerous productions in UK theaters, most recently Marianne Elliot's Husbands & Sons at The National Theatre.
Lesser's credits include several shows with the Royal Shakespeare Company, most recently Hamlet, which played earlier this year.
The upcoming Harry Potter series is written and executive-produced by Francesca Gardiner. Mark Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes of the series for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The series is executive produced by J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.
